How Much Electricity Does Folding@Home Consume?
I’ve been wondering this week just how much electricity my PS3 consumes when it is running Folding@Home. It gets so hot, I’ve assumed it must be using up a lot of juice. I decided not to stress myself out about as it’s all for a good cause.
However, IGN have actually worked it out and come up with figures of between $6.88-27.76 to run Folding@home on a Playstation 3 for 24 hours a day for a week. That’s quite a lot of cash, particularly if you assume that UK utilities cost at least 50% more which is probably a safe assumption…
Luckily the longest Folding@Home session I’ve done so far is about 12 hours. I haven’t left it running for longer than that as I’m really concerned about cooling, as my PS3 gets almost too hot to touch which can’t be a good thing.
