Yahoo Mail API Launched

In its latest attempt to woo the developer community, Yahoo! released the API for Yahoo Mail yesterday. This was missed by most sites in amongst the reporting of Yahoo adding unlimited email storage from May. I think this is a very smart move by Yahoo in an attempt to make an already very popular service even better.

I actually think this is the bigger story of the two, as although unlimited email storage may sound impressive the reality is that the majority of users have small mailboxes.   However, releasing the API for Yahoo Mail will allow developers to access the Yahoo Mail service and develop new functionality, services and features which could be used potentially by a massive 249 million Yahoo Mail users.

Are you a Yahoo Mail user? What features would you like to see added?

    Unlimited, wow.

I think a big feature Yahoo and Gmail are both missing is IMAP email access. I’ve been accessing my email over IMAP from my favorite email client for a decade now.

Webmail is nice, but not quite as functional yet as email clients, at least not for me. Working offline, etc.

    Have an awesome day!

So everyone should be expecting some plugins for Yahoo Mail?

Yes, where’s IMAP. I agree with Dan & Jennifer that the Big G and Yahoo need to get with it.

The API is indeed great for developers & its good to see yahoo shaping up to the big G with more functionality that’s for sure.
    Cheers, Don.
