PS3 Vs Xbox 360: Which Has Better Graphics?

I had one of my friends over on Sunday to check out my new PS3 and we decided that the Playstation 3 definitely had a lot of potential and probably had better graphics than the Xbox 360. The rest of my Ghost Recon ’squad’ is coming round on Sunday for an all-night session, so I’ll be able to get a few more opinions.
Gametrailers.com did a slightly more ’scientific’ experiment by comparing Oblivion on the Xbox 360 and PS3. I couldn’t really tell the difference between the two consoles. Let me know if you do any better.
The Oblivion video did however entice me to dig out my PC copy of Oblivion that I’ve only played for an hour, as the game looked awesome. Yet another game to add to the list of titles that I need to find time to play… Gears Of War, Ghost Recon, Fear, Resistance, Motorstorm, Project Gotham……

I have both the xbox 360 and the ps3 which are played on a 40″ samsung 1080p lcd, to be honest you can’t really tell the difference unless you really look for it, but when you do the ps3 ever so slightly has the edge, as as mentioned before exclusive titles like Killzone 2 really do show the power of the ps3 compared to the xbox 360. Developers are currently using around 95% of the xbox’s potential whereas they are only using around 35% of the ps3’s potential when developers actually work out how to unleash the power of the ps3 i have no doubt it will blow away the xbox 360. As far as reliability goes i am on my second xbox 360, but i am on my third PS3 so they are pretty much the same, i know loads of people who have had to send their ps3’s back. So which one is best? there is no answer as it depends what you want and how much you have to spend, if you have around £130, dont want to watch blu-rays and don’t mind having to buy a better console a couple of years down the line, then buy the xbox 360 it will do what you want it too for less than half the price of an ps3, but if you want to watch blu-rays on a 1080p tv and want a machine that is future proof for at least 5 years and that will have amazing games as soon as developers learn how to unlock all that ps3 processing power and you have £300 to burn then get the ps3, you won’t regret it!
xbox 360 bundle. While I agree with the overall sentiment of your post, there are a couple of things that need pointing out.
1. 35% of PS3’s power, nah, even Guerilla said that KZ2 used around 60% of PS3’s power, & while there is more to come, I wouldn’t get your hopes up to see something nearly 3 times better than Kilzzone 2.
2. Reliability, I think you & your friends were unlucky with the PS3. It’s a known fact that it’s more reliable than the 360 by a wide margin. 2 years ago the 360’s fail rate was 30%, I think it’s about half that now, while the PS3 is around the 1% mark. Before any 360 fanboys say that Microsoft have completely fixed the 360, shop staff at Game has told me that they are still getting them back daily, including Falcons & Jaspers, & what with the RROD, E74 & disc scratching that was highlighted on Watchdog last week, I don’t think the 360’s problems are over yet.
At Kanden101,
First the topic was”graphics”,reason for reminding you was cause every thread gets damage by reliability on the 360 plus that has nothing to do with graphics anyways, if you don’t have 1080p setup you can’t know which is better. I have both on 1080p and most game look very similar on multi-cross platform games considering is a port 90% of the time to ps3 but when it comes to exclusives ps3 all day. Most 360 fanboys bash ps3 or vice versa for several reasons which is dumb why? Both camps claim victory when the only ones that can claim victory is Developers that are making it possible for games to come looking very similar considering that both have deferent architectures never mind work with a very small amount of resources *Ram* but they manage to give us gamers nice games like Killzone2 and on Gears2.
Fair point bandolero. On the point of graphics then. For multiplatform, recent releases are pretty much identical bar nitpicking, but as the PS3 architecture is not exactly normal it tends to be frame rate that suffers when the ports aren’t that good. For exclusives the PS3 is really showing the way (even if only by a small margin) with the likes of Killzone 2, & Uncharted looks pretty awesome considering it’s an oldie.
As for the 1080 discussion, am I under the impression (correct me if I’m wrong) that the 360 does not support 1080p through HDMI, & that just because a 360 game box says 1080p doesn’t mean that it’s native, it upscales a lot of games. The PS3 on the other hand actually states the native resolution on the back of the box, ie Killzone 2 is 720p because that’s what the box says. The PS3/TV will obviously upscale it to 1080p if that’s what you’ve got. See http://www.makeyougohmm.com/20070721/4652/ for more information on this.
Also, I’ve read a few articles that have clearly indicated that the human eye has real trouble telling the difference between 720p & 1080p unless it’s an uber large TV (50″+) & you’re sat close to it (not that you’ll find a 720p TV over that size anyway). I certainly couldn’t tell the difference in the shop when we bought our 40″ Samsung 720p TV, & it was £200-£300 cheaper. See http://reviews.cnet.com/720p-vs-1080p-hdtv/?tag=txt as 1 example of this.
and all the talk about can only be done on a ps3 actually the 360 has better graphic power than the ps3. take it or leave it. or you could check this out from someone that produces games for all major platforms. Graphics: The XBOX 360 is a clear winner. The GPU is more powerful. It has more powerful fillrate, and far more pixel and vertex processing horsepower. Part of the reason is their choice of memory, and architecture of pixel and vertex procesing. I cant get into details but the same vertex shader will run much slower on the PS3 than the XBOX 360. The 360 also has a clever new way rendering high definition anti aliased back buffers. To accomplish the same effect on PS3 is prohibitively expensive. For this reason I think many games will have no choice but to run in non-HD resolutions on the PS3 version, use a lower quality anti aliasing technique, or do back buffer upscaling. The end result in all cases is going to be noticeably worse image quality. so anything that they can do on the ps3 can be done on the 360 but oh so slightly better. ill stick with pc though so yall can have your consoles wich will be obsolete in another 5 to 6 years ill stick with just upping my pc. plus when it comes to it technology is ultimatly found through money and ms has def. got that over sony. rumors are ms is already working on there next console if its true or not is yet to be seen but in the end ms might actually talk sony into bighting when they offer em something they cant refuse and then death to the station once and for all. yay :D
do not know why up to now people are bickering on which is better. i got a friend who is obviously a ps3 fanboy and my god is HE irritating. he keeps on yapping about how powerful ps3 is. ok, its powerful, oh yeah its bluray. i try to avoid conversation so while he was sitting there beside me ranting about how ps3 owns 360 so much while I AM PLAYING re5 on my 360. i pity the fool who has friends like this. (yah i pity me, but he’s my friend so what can i do.)
reality speaking, ps3 is indeed powerful than 360.
BUT…what to do with that??
would you like to own a more expensive console knowing a cheaper one provides the same performance and actually even better at times.
i don’t want to be labeled as a 360 fanboy, i am not, i appreciate the ps3 technical prowess.
i think IT is the FUTURE OF GAMING.
BUT..right NOW, the PRESENT OF GAMING is 360. Hands down. if you are planning to buy a console now, buy a 360, you will get more than your moneys worth. thinking of buying ps3 for future gaming? then why buy PS3 NOW? buy it in the future. ever heard of a console being more expensive over time? NOPE. it gets cheaper as it gets older (not talking antiques here =p)
after 5 or 6 years 360 may be taken over by ps3, and then, at that moment buy your ps3 and appreciate all that blu-ray and technical power at a much cheaper price with more games to choose from and a more solid online network. think of it this way, ps3 is like an ultra modern car capable of ultra high speed. but it does not run on gasoline, it runs on something we dont have yet in our time. would you buy that now? or buy it in the future where it is cheaper and you can use it all the time because plutonium will be available to the masses LOL.
