@Robert

My view is that a low CPC ad is being displayed then there is something wrong with your post, as Google will try and display the most relevant ad with the highest CPC. If that turns out to be a MFA site then so be it.

Sometimes, when I see Google has messed up I look at the post and try to work out why and then do some edits. e.g. my post offering Joost invites got ads about wedding invites, so I went back and removed the word 'invite' as many times as I could to improve the ads.

I'm curious about your thoughts on Made For Adsense sites. Are you at least looking to block those? Those often have a low CPC but they also impact the reader's experience. A reader follows a link to one of these expecting to find information and instead finds a site with nothing but a few titles and a bunch of ads.

Tru. I need to work on some quality content and SEO to achieve your traffic levels, Everton.

Say, Have you used the new Adsense referral system? It's pretty cool to work with.

@TJP I was referring to your earlier statement:

<blockquote>But if you get lots of traffic, adsense will convert anyways due to tons of impressions.</blockquote>

i.e. The amount of traffic doesn't impact how well adsense converts.

I did have a few sites excluded using the ad filter but most of them are spanish sites which would give no meaning whatsoever to whoever is looking at it..

And I thought I was the only one who had received the mail ;)

<blockquote>I don’t get why people (sorry for singling you out TJP) often refer to the level of traffic when talking about conversion. Whether a section of your site gets a lot of traffic or not is irrelevant. Conversion is conversion regardless of the traffic level, and is all that matters.</blockquote>

Traffic matters because 1) adsense pays CPC and CPM, so you will benefit from clicks and impressions combined. 2) most publishers rely on 1-2 streams of income - like adsense and a second option. Even a poor conversion rate can translate in lots of money, which is why some publishers go with poor performing adsense ads over another income source that may or may not perform as well.

CTR is CTR, but would you rather place adsense ads that are guaranteed to generate $2 CPM or experiment with another ad source altogether? Publishers are comfortable with guaranteed results.

Just my 2 cents.

@Donncha - adsense targetting definitely worked for me.

@Ashish - he he didn't realise you'd gone over to the dark side and taken my theme. Paged comments should work out the box. Post more details in the forum - don't want to hijack this thread

I tried Adsense targetting for over a week but it didn't help much unfortunately. Google needs a helping hand. Check out the sites <a href="http://www.adsblacklist.com/member/donncha/" rel="nofollow">I reported</a> to adsblacklist and tell me they shouldn't be filtered.

<blockquote>But if you get lots of traffic, adsense will convert anyways due to tons of impressions.</blockquote>
I don't get why people (sorry for singling you out TJP) often refer to the level of traffic when talking about conversion. Whether a section of your site gets a lot of traffic or not is irrelevant. Conversion is conversion regardless of the traffic level, and is all that matters.

The conversion of my homepage ads and eCPM is better than anything I can currently get from a CPM ad, and is also high enough to make running th ads worthwhile so my adsense units stay for now.

Homepage ads don't perform well because they confuse Google a lot. Your homepage content is always changing, so the Adsense Bot has to think really hard as to which ads should be shown.

Whereas with single post content, it's static so there is never any about about the content. In my experience, Adsense is ineffective on homepages. Advertising that's related to your blog's overall theme would be more effective on your homepage IMO. But if you get lots of traffic, adsense will convert anyways due to tons of impressions.

@Donncha

If your objective is to stop MFA sites that target words like ‘comments’, ‘trackbacks’, ‘pings’, ‘archives’ then a more effective way is to use adsense targetting. The competitive filter isn't the tool to do this, especially as you can only add 200 sites and I'm guessing there are thousands of MFA sites, that probably change urls every month

I think you're doing yourselves a diservice if you don't use the ad filter. My filter is at the max 200 sites because I don't think Google do a good enough job of selecting adverts for my sites. I <a href="http://notspam.org/the-adsense-april-2007-optimisation-report/" rel="nofollow">wrote about</a> that Adsense report and came to the conclusion that Google have to take into consideration the keywords used on a blog, as well as the cost of each advert.
Unfortunately (for site owners) I think they put too much emphasis on page content, and because a lot of MFA sites target the commonly used phrases and words on blogs (like 'comments', 'trackbacks', 'pings', 'archives'..) they get displayed because they match more keywords than higher paying ads.
Check out my site for my current ad filter

Unfortunately (for site owners) I think they put too much emphasis on page content, and because a lot of MFA sites target the commonly used phrases and words on blogs (like ‘comments’, ‘trackbacks’, ‘pings’, ‘archives’..) they get displayed because they match more keywords than higher paying ads.
Check out my site for my current ad filter

@Everton: That sounds interesting. So its not necessary that cpm based ads will pay good. Thanks for the clarification.

<blockquote>@Enblogopedia: Only thing that can do well on home pages are impression based ads. It doesn’t matter somebody clicks or not.</blockquote>

Not true in all cases, and probably wrong in most cases. You can make a decent CPM off homepage ads -you just have to put them in the right place! Yes, they may not account for a high proportion of traffic but all impressions count in my view. I managed an average of $2.5 for mine last month which is better than anything I will get from a CPM ad (TF 468x60 banners don't have a good CPM) and I'd rather have a nice clean adsense unit than an annoying animated or 'smiley' ad!

That link on JohnTp was good, we got into some good discussion there. If somebody is checking the link, check the comments. You will get some good ideas

<blockquote>Home page ads will never pay well.</blockquote>
I agree with Ashish here too!
Most of people are coming to individual pages(posts, categories..etc) through RSS, other posts from other sites or through SE and not to the home page, so the CTR will be low obviously. Read this <a href="http://www.johntp.com/2007/03/08/ads-on-homepage-cpc-or-cpm/" rel="nofollow">informative article</a>.

I put any adsense unit that doesn't generate a cpm of at least $1.5-2 on my watchlist. If a unit in my watchlist generates a high percentage of my overall units then it gets nuked straight away so that it won't pull the CPM down of my better units.

The unit at the top of my index pages doesn't do too badly at around $2+ cpm. Anyway, it only accounts for around 5% of my overall impressions so I doubt removing it would have a big impact on my overall CPM.

As to using the competitive filter to improve CPM I'm convinced that this isn't possible. As Dan & Musiq said it's pointless second-guessing Google - just let Google decide what ads are best to run and concentrate on writing the right content. The competitive ad filter should only be used to block competitors if you are worried about their ads appearing on your site. In my view if competitors want to waste their money trying to steal my customers, then I'm happy to take their cash.

Thanks Ashish.

Our best ad CTRs are on the tag and category pages, followed by post detail pages.

We get most of our traffic to the post detail pages, followed by the category and tag pages, and a little to the homepage.

Have an awesome day!

@ Dan: It took around a week. I saw my ctr increasing. At least it worked for me. I used the ad filter also. According to my analysis ads should be shown only where its required like in sigle posts. This works well for me.

I would request Everybody to share their experience.

@Everton: If you can jump into the discussion it will be great. Since you had ads on home page tags archives and on posts...you can give us a better view.
