Alexa Rank Experiment Update – Something Is Working

A few weeks ago I started an experiment with several other Connected Internet readers to see if we could increase Alexa Ranks, which are notoriously inaccurate. For many sites these inaccuracies aren’t an issue, but many advertising services like Text-Link Ads and ReviewMe, as well as potential advertisers use these stats to gauge the value of advertising on a site, so monitoring your Alexa Rank can be important.

I’m not sure which of the four changes I’ve made to Increase My Alexa Rank are working, but at least one of them appears to be working.

Although my 3 month average hasn’t caught up yet as the experiment hasn’t been running for long enough, my daily and weekly Alexa Rank numbers have improved by 30-60% over the last two weeks. My 3 month Alexa Rank has fallen from 26,070 to 24,050, but my one month average has fallen to 14, 536! According to Google Analytic my site traffic has been fairly consistent, so I’m starting to believe that the experiment is working. To take part in the experiment and to try and Increase Alexa Rank then read this post and implement one or more of the four experiments. if you’re looking for more steps to try then check out this post on Dosh Dosh.

  • I have used one of the 4 techniques you wrote about and I have had good results too :)

BTW, I miss a link at the end of this sentence "To take part in the experiment and to try and Increase Alexa Rank then read this post " ;)
  • Yeah I also did what you said earlier...It has gone up too high that I started doubting, Is the Alexa statistics true and correct? :)
  • @Roberto

    Thanks - added the link.

    @Mr. Byte

Your rank has improved or got worse? The reason I started the experiment is because of how inaccurate the Alexa system is. Unfortunately you can't ignore it though as advertisers use the data.
  • Definitely interested to see if the trend continues or stabilises / drops off. I think I'll install the toolbars on my family's computers now - as I end up doing everyones technical support in any case and so this can be my payment in kind :-)
  • As I've said, I've seen some pretty decent growth with my traffic. In two weeks my rating has climbed and, interestingly, so has my traffic.

I think right now it's really a question of which came first. Did I start seeing a growth in traffic and thus my Alexa rank started to climb or did I affect my Alexa rank and as a result traffic started to increase in kind.

This week I'll be writing about the experiment and encouraging my readers to both add the toolbars and also check out their own results. I'll definitely send them back to the original post here as well!

I'm kind of surprised at the result but am very enthused. Right now I'm averaging around 200 visitors a day - that's almost double since the beginning of the experiment. I'm curious to see how it grows from here.

Increasing Alexa rank won't lead to more traffic.
  • You can call me stupid, but this project somehow increase my Alexa Rank as well. I believe, a minority of Connected Internet Readers are TechBuzz readers.. and that's how it helped me :P

    Thanks..

Most definitely true. I think the more we continue collectively to encourage our readers to install the Alexa toolbar and Firefox extension the more we will all benefit, as we share a lot of readers.

You should throw up a post Thilak to tap directly into your own readers.
  • We could call it "crowd ranking" :-)
  • This is worth a try, it looks very promising.
