Giganews Increase Usenet Retention To 120 Days
I’ve been expecting Giganews announcement that it’s Usenet retention (how long old posts are kept for ) has been increased to 120 days, ever since I spotted that my favourite newreader newsleecher had increased it’s search function to 140 days.
Providing 120 days of retention is a major achievement when you consider the share amount of content that is posted each day in newsgroups, which is growing exponentially as file sizes get bigger and users get ever faster connections.
Martin quite rightly says that Giganews is “…the best Usenet provider on the planet…”. Not only does Giganews’ huge 120 day retention shame other Usenet services who tend to only provide 5-7 days retention, but the completion rate is virtually 100%.
If you haven’t tried newsgroups yet and want to get a feel for what’s available then have a look at Newzbin or Binsearch. These sites allow you to very quickly see what content is currently on the newsgroups.

@Mr Byte
Usenet is the best way to download content - lightyears ahead of P2P/Bittorrent.

I just went to activate you but it looks like you sorted everything. Let me know if you’re still having problems

I’ve been using Easynews for years now, the best thing about that for me is the web-based search - does Giganews have a similar interface?
I’ve also tried a dedicated new reader in the past, but have never got along with it after several tries, but will give Newsleecher a go, it certainly looks more user friendly than the other ones I’ve tried and failed with.

Giganews doesn’t provide an interface, but Newsleecher couldn’t be easier to use.

The Supersearch from my quick bit of testing does seem to be very fast and comprehensive with the added bonus of taking away the need for all the individual mouse clicks that I have to do in using the web interface.
So far so good, am quite impressed with Newsleecher - a definite step up from the prvious newsgroup readers I’ve used.
Cheers!
