PC911: Computer Help In Plain English

PC911: Computer Help In Plain English

I was approached directly last week by PC911 who asked me to write a sponsored review of their site.

I had a quick check of the site and agreed within 30 seconds as PC911 passed my ‘CV’ test. That’s the time it takes a good recruiter to decide whether or not to invite a candidate in for an interview.

PC911 is the kind of site I would love to have the time to develop. The site contains hundreds of posts and topics on a number of computing issues. But what I think makes the site stand apart is all the tips are written in plain English.

What I find frustrating about many tech sites is they are not put together in a friendly format that makes it easy for people other than enthusiasts to follow. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to find advice on a topic and left a post in a forum asking for help, only to regret doing so because I couldn’t understand the answer, or because the site users flamed me for being a ‘newb’.

You’ll never have that problem with PC911 where all advice is nice, clear and well explained. There’s even a new blog that will allow users to interact more with the PC911 site, as well as making it easier for readers to subscribe to new content and posts.

There’s even a forum in the pipeline, which I think more sites such add as it allows readers to start their own topics and talk directly to each other like in my forum. The site is also well laid out and advertising is nicely integrated, unlike many other PC sites.

There are hundreds of pages on tips, videos, tweaks and reviews in the PC911 site, which isn’t surprising given that the site is over 8 years old. One of the nice features of the PC911 site is the way that all the content is nicely grouped together. Take for instance the Speed Up Your Computer Video Series, that has grouped together 7 useful video guides all on one page. In total there are 41 videos on the site covering useful topics like Preventing Malicious code, Emptying The Windows Prefetch Folder and Increasing Graphics Performance.

I think the new blog though is going to introduce PC911 to an even wider audience, particularly as it features an RSS feed. Topics covered so far include Backing Up The Registry And Using System Restore, Best Security Practices for PC Users and Top 10 Ways To Speed Up Your Computer.

All in all, PC911 is definitely a site to check out for solutions to current problems, or an RSS feed worth subscribing to for ways to get more out of your PC.

Any site that recommends a Myth like cleaning the prefetch folder should not be recommended.

I can’t make heads or tails of this reworked site. Access to help, which should be the primary goal, is now impossible.
