CinePlayer DVD Decoder For Vista- Best Quality DVD Playback

I made some progress in the week with my new Home Theatre PC. My new 7950GT graphics card arrived on Tuesday, which totally solved the poor quality video on my 42″ Plasma. The image is stunning and it made me realise that the Samsung monitors on my main PC are very low quality.  I won’t be replacing them though as they are fine for working on.

I’ve just purchased the Roxio CinePlayer DVD Decoder for Windows Vista which promises the ‘highest quality DVD playback on a Microsoft Windows Vista PC‘. Quite a bold claim, but given that CinePlayer is written specifically just for Windows Vista I can believe the claim.

I haven’t installed it yet, but I’m going to test it out on my HTPC when I get back in this evening. Normally I like to use a trial version before buying a program, but at $14.99 or £7 thanks to the strong English Pound, I can afford to take a punt. If you’re still running Windows XP then in the past I’ve found that PowerDVD 7 gave me the best DVD and Video playback.

Other HTPC projects for this evening are:

  • To see if I can remove the username and password prompt whenever my HTPC tries to access a shared folder on my other Vista PC for the first time
  • Work out what kind of audio cable fits into a SPDIF slot (can anyone help?)
  • Try and work out how to upscale my DVDs (if my PC is running at 1280×720 does it do this automatically?)

I just asked for a help. It costs 15 dollars. Is it too much? I just dont have a credit card and dont want to pay twice.
    Please help.
  • I have to agree Ivan - I was so close to deleting the comment, but your response is better

If you want a copy of somebodys serial you should ask a pirat, not a software developer like myself:)

Well i think your missing something here... the mpeg codec that ships with home permium sucs. Compare the video quality with power dvd and you will see the difference

I think you are getting this wrong. If you already have Home Premium you dont need a new codec. These codecs are if you have Windows Home Basic or Business and want to be able to play a DVD.

I am currently using the default one, but it sux. I think I'll try the one from cyberlink: http://www.cyberlink.com/vista_plugin/dvd/enu/p...
  • I did try and get my money back but I couldn't find a proper support link - last time I purchase Roxio products.

What are you currently using for DVD playback? I'm just using MCE at the moment

Well I installed it also but found out that it actually wasn't. I installed a software that detects the installed dvd decoder, and cineplayer didn't show up. If you try to reinstall it, it tells you to remove it first, but there are no way to remove it. I went to roxio's forum and they have plenty of unhappy customers that have the same problem. You should get a refound... I did
  • To be honest, I couldn't tell the difference and I couldn't even tell if it was working. Plus, I now use Vista Media Center almost exclusivly and I'm happy with the performance.
