Digg: Am I In A Gay Bar?
I just read a funny story over on Valleywag by one of the few females at the recent Digg parties, which really hit home how few female tech bloggers there are:
I’m walking upstairs and a guy i’ve never seen before pulls me aside with a panicked look on his face and goes: “AM I IN A GAY BAR??”
And i was like, “Um. No.”
And he was like “Are you SURE?”
And I said “Well maybe it is normally, but not tonight” — to which he says:
“Then why are you like the third woman i’ve seen?”
To which i replied, “Ohhhh, because it’s a DIGG PARTY!”
Apparently, he’d be dragged there by his friends and had no idea.
On my blog, I don’t have any regular female commenters. The closest I have is ‘Dan and Jennifer’, although Dan seems to do all the talking on the blog, although Jennifer has sent me the occasional email. I know there are lots of female bloggers out there, but why no tech bloggers?

[...] If you’re just based in San Francisco then drop me a line - it’d be cool to meet some of you face 2 face. If there’s enough interest we might even arrange a bar meet, which might generate some great quotes like ‘Am I in a gay bar?‘! [...]

I am starting a tech blog too, albeit it’s called Tech Talk in Plain English and geared towards making tech friendly to non-geeks.
It’s interesting - when I go to events here - podcamps, social networking meetups, there is a fair representation of women, but you’re right, not too many gravitate to pure tech as a subject.
