What’s Your Biggest Career Mistake?

One of my favourite sites at the moment Valleywag has a funny story about Guy Kawasaki and Yahoo. Apparently Guy was offered the role of chief executive at a small startup called Yahoo……Guy’s response was:

‘It’s too far to drive, and I don’t see how it can be a business.’

What’s your biggest career mistake? One that springs to mind for me is turning down a job offer from Nomura to join a new team they were setting up, which would have been my first job. The new Principal Finance team was being headed up by Guy Hands and I would have been their first graduate entrant.

I decided to not take the role as Nomura had a reputation for starting new teams and closing them down the following year, so I decided I didn’t want to risk being made redundant after only 12 months in my first job. Little did I know that the team go on to become one of the most successful finance teams ever in the UK…

No wonder Guy asked ‘is that all?’ when I answered his question about how much I expected to earn in my first year!
