Test Your Broadband Speed For Free

View Comments May 8, 2007 | Everton

I get a lot of visitors visiting my site looking for a BroadBand Speed test, so I’ve decided to add a Broadband Speed Test to the site.

You can use the test to check that you are getting what you are paying for, or whether you should start looking for a new Broadband ISP or maybe a new computer.

How It Works

Start the test by clicking the big button in the center of the page. The test first starts by downloading a file and measures how long it takes. After the download is finished the speed checker tries to upload a file and measures your upload speed.

If you want to get accurate results then you should not use your internet connection for any other applications once the speed checker is running, and run the test a few times so that an average speed can be calculated.

The broadband speed is measured in Kbps (kilobits per second). Approximately 1000 Kbps is 1Mb/s.

Living in France must be one of the most frustrating and expensive ways to connect via adsl. Orange/France Telecom have no idea of customer service (in that include politeness). They charge like a wounded bull and just do not come up to their promises. Five weeks to change from one ISP to another with lost telephone and internet connections during this time. Minimum contract time one year with no get outs. Please you UK subscribers don’t complain about your ISPs.

I can confirm your remarks with my own experience of FT/Orange.Their staff are rude, aggressive and downright dishonest. I bought a “Livebox” and when it played up they changed it. About nine months later they told me that due to an oversight they had not been charging me rental on it so they would now do it by direct debit. Even sending them copies of the purchase receipt made no difference. It took me about six months and several abusive letters (from them) before reason prevailed. My decision, avoid direct debit then they have to chase you if they want to get money from you for nothing.

I have tiscali (originally homechoice) comments:
    – max speed 2.5MB, am paying for 8MB and line allegedly capable of 9MB. during the day it can drop to less than 0.5MB
    – sometimes get chucked out for no obvious reason
    – technical service v v patchy. if you are unlucky and get put thru to bangalore or wherever, not a clue, ever. Scots call centre generally v competent (and nice to listen to)

  5. simon says:

  6. Mswork says:
