If You’re Going To Sell Stolen Goods Online Use An Alias

A story has just hit the digg homepage telling the story of Philip who had his $2000 Sony HDV Camcorder stolen, and who suspected a ‘friend’ called Amanda.

Philip kept an eye out on the web for his HDV Camcorder, and lo and behold it appeared on swapace.com five days later, and the person selling the camera had the same username as Amanda did on Myspace.

Philip contacted the police and as usual they couldn’t be bothered to go and get his camera, so he posted a nice video on YouTube asking people to politely call/text/IM Amanda to ask her to do the right thing and return the camera. Now that the story has hit Digg, I don’t think a lot of these calls are going to be polite, given that I don’t think that word is in the typical Digg user’s vocabulary.

  • He was lucky to discover his friend stolen his cam.
  • If you are dumb enough to steal you are dumb enough to use the same alias.

The digg users will surely punish her.

I have used the website mentioned SwapAce.com many times and never had a problem. It is a cool website - I don't think it is a publicity stunt.
  • Luckily her MySpace page is set to private, but her mobile and IM must be getting bombarded by now. If it isn't, it will when the US wakes up in a few hours.

I'm not too happy with her details being splashed all over the web, but she deserves it for stealing an expensive item and being dumb enough to use the same alias.
  • I can imagine the kind of calls and instant messages she must be getting. I wonder if she'll actually return the camera.
