Washington Is First State To Ban Texting While Driving
Textually.org reports that Washington is the first State in the US to ban texting whilst driving, although it is only becomes an offence if the driver has already committed another offence. How on earth they will work this out I have no idea.
Is it illegal to use a mobile whilst driving in the States? It is in the UK, although you will still see many drivers talking on their phones as they drive, and I’ve never come across anyone who has been fined. I think the fine is £1000, and it’s justified as most people can’t drive and talk at the same time.
If I’m driving these days I always use a bluetooth headset or the speakerphone. I learnt my lesson the hard way a few years ago when I was using my handset whilst talking to one of my colleagues back at the office, when I went into the back of another car. There wasn’t a lot of damage, but by the time I got back to the office everyone knew and I never lived it down, particularly as I’d just gotten a brand new shiny expensive car.

There is a list of countries that ban cellphones while driving here:
http://www.cellular-news.com/car_bans/
It has a seperate section for the US. It looks like the most common ban over there are for school bus drivers.
In Denmark we are talking about banning talking on the phone even with a hands free set. Research shows that you don’t concentrate 100% on driving when talking.
Sometimes when I talk and drive I can suddenly be at my destination and I can’t even remember what happened on the way there. I guess that explains quite well how dangerous it is.
(The Americans should concentrate on their weapon laws and overweight first, but thats another story)

It’s only a matter of time…The U.S. will soon join the list of countries with the ban.

I have to admit that my driving suffers when I use my headset. I think I’m better with the speakerphone, as I don’t tend to focus as much on what is being said.

Yeah it is kinda weird that there is such a huge difference between those too things.
Maybe its because you feel like there is more of a distance when using the speakerphone, kinda like talking to a passenger, while the headset is more “personal” or closer, so to speak.
