BT The Number 1 Broadband Provider In The UK
BT has regained it’s lead as the number one Broadband Provider in the UK, passing Virgin Media who had held the top spot for the last year. BT now has 3.7m Broadband users in the UK and 26% of the overall market. What was even more impressive was that BT grabbed 32% of all new customers during the last quarter, despite the huge amounts of money spent by BSkyB and Virgin Media who relaunched in February.
I’m still a Virgin Media customer and I probably will stick with them for a while, as although Virgin Media recently announced Speed capping which hasn’t gone down very well, I don’t think the speed caps are being applied to customers in the old Telewest franchises where the network is superior to the network in the old ntl franchise. What could make me move though is BT Vision, which offers a nice way to get quality programming on demand without having to pay a monthly subscription for junk I don’t want or have time to watch.

I’m always rather sceptical when it comes to BT. I’ve had many problems with their services and subsequent customer service over the years.
I’m guessing that these figures include the companies that BT are buying, such as Plusnet that they recently acquired?
Obviously it’s still growth for BT, but I’d also say that it’s perhaps not growth based on gaining new customers on the strength of their service?
Just me playing devil’s advocate

you’re right, the 3.7m is a combination of BT Broadband and Plusnet. Plusnet only account for 0.2m.
Service is becoming key in the UK, and ntl don’t seem to have benefitted from using the Virgin brand, and CPW continue to struggle. As the market matures it will become even more important

I’ve also heard some less-than-sparkling things about BT. One thing I read in another blog is that they secretly block ports. It’s important to investigate a provider before investing in their services, especially if you are getting something like a business t1 line.
