Dan and Jennifer. I would definitely recommend to always use the latest version of WordPress. It is possible to use exploits in older versions to gain access to your blog as an administrator and delete the database, rewrite articles or change the adsense code.

Well I’ve done it too now – Upgraded to 2.2 just now. Except from Widgets being activated as a default and it even remembered my old widgets settings, even though I removed them all. So my blog had the widgets up and the customised sidebar. That didn’t look pretty, except from that nothing to report. I haven’t noticed any performance improvements.

Ok, how about performance? any substancial performance increase?

We’re tinkering with ways to drastically improve performance for WordPress (and Openads – that one’s a real killer in high traffic).

Don’t like the idea of wp-cache, with the issue of potentially showing stale data and non-dynamic content.

Especially when there’s a lot of room for improvement in PHP execution speed since both WP and Openads are written entirely in PHP – i.e. an interpreted language, meaning very high overhead for each pagever.

So, we’ll be experimenting with a PHP object cache module for Apache called eAccelerator. We’ve used a previous incarnation called Turck MMCache before, and it did wonders for our PHP-driven online dating site a couple years ago.

The idea is that the PHP code is compiled ONLY ONCE and then the object version (which is usually discarded upon execution now) is kept in shared memory (or a disk file). All subsequent calls to that file pull up the object version directly. So, no more recompiling each file (and ALL it’s dependent files) for each pageview.

Will let you know how it works out; we’ll be trying this in about a week as part of our migration.

The big change I noticed was the absence of the Preview Post window. I spent hours hacking files, reading forums, and deleting and reinstalling files just find out it has been replaced by a simple link. Post Preview Change in WordPress 2.2

Did you spot any major benefits over the 2.1 series?

I just updated my blog (http://dvdrox.altervista.org) to the new WordPress version. Really simple to do and without any problem, for this moment. Better if you deactivate all your plugins before proceed, even if I had no problem keeping them on!

the only update in the new version of typoxp that typo xp reloaded is based on is widget support. I think somehow the way widgets are supported has changed, so I might have have to update this theme as well

I’m not sure if you are aware of it, but there is a new version of TypoXP out. It is 2.2-compatible after several test. I think the new version is called 2.0.1.
