Sony To Drop PS3 Price – Finally Admitting Too Expensive?

GigaOM reports that Sony have just unveiled a new 80GB PS3 model today which will be launched first in South Korea. After recently cancelling the 20GB model in America, introducing the 80GB model would provide a perfect excuse to drop the price of the $599 60GB.
When Sony first released the Sony PS3 pricing they justified it because of all the technology it was packing. However, the problem with this approach is that just because something is good value doesn’t mean it isn’t expensive.
One of the first projects I worked on when I was a Management Consultant was for EuroDisney when it first launched and was struggling, and we were tasked with trying to work out why. One of the common complaints was that the food was too expensive, which baffled the EuroDisney staff as pound for pound the food cost the same as elsewhere in Europe.
The problem after we did a bit of digging was the size of the portions. Yes, the hotdogs cost the same per pound, but the problem was that the portions were twice the size and European kids weren’t able to eat the same portions as American kids and couldn’t finish their food. So, parents were left feeling that they’d wasted their money after spending a whopping £20 and hotdogs and fries for two kids.
Hopefully Sony will soon make the Playstation 3’s price more appetising.
