My real introduction to the internet began in 1997 when I got transferred to the US. Although we had ONE PC (!!) in the London office of my firm that was connected to the internet, nobody really knew what it was for. Just after I got to the US office they got a T1 line installed which seemed unbelievably fast back then, and every PC had net access.
I quickly figured out that I could use the internet to stay in touch with what was happening back home, with sites like The Times and The BBC. I could even watch all the weekends football goals on rete.com, which sadly got shut down a few years ago.
I still use The BBC’s site and The Times, but for a so-called quality broadsheet (I think it’s the oldest newspaper still in circulation), The Times has the worst online ads policy ever. I have never seen a site use so many popups, pop-unders, flash etc ads. Everytime I visit a new page I always worry about what crap is suddenly going to appear that I have to watch before I can read the stories.
Which site that you read regularly do you think has the worst ad policy?
I can tell what’s the best ad I’ve ever seen though. If you quickly head on over to Engadget, they’ve got an amazing Apple iPod campaign running at the moment where the dancers somehow manage to leave the banner space and dance on the rest of the page!
