UK Mobile Internet Market 1/5 The Size Of PC Internet Market

Comscore have just released stats on the state of the UK Mobile Internet market. In January 2007 5.7 million people used a mobile device to access the web. This compares to the 30 million million people who accessed the internet from a PC. Of the 5.7 million users, individuals under 35 accounted for 67% of the overall audience.

I’m staggered by the numbers, as I really didn’t think mobile internet usage had hit these levels. I really think that usage of the mobile internet is close to exploding, particularly as the ‘texting generation’ get older and start earning and spending.

Devices are also finally starting to deliver a rich experience.  Take my Nokia N95 for instance. I really can’t fault it, and apart from the poor GPS service, I can’t think of many things I’d want to change. I love it so much, I really think I’ve finally got a phone which I will keep for more than 6-10 months, rather than upgrading to the latest phone like I normally do.

What was disappointing to see in the Comscore report was that the usual suspects are the five most popular sites. The top five mobile sites in the UK are (in order):

  1. The BBC
  2. MSN-Windows Live
  3. Yahoo!
  4. Google
  5. SKY

Actually this is an interesting point :D I’ve only just recently installed the WP-mobile plugin by Alex King (which isn’t working on me atm but I don’t know why… still investigating) because my site has required me to look up a ton of Japanese sites - and the curious thing I discovered was that they almost always had BIG signs indicating their mobile web-address, a result of the phenomenon (?) that in Japan at least, surfing the internet using a mobile is so common (for news/ events/ timetables etc.) every major website is required(?) to have a mobile-version of the website.
If it wasn’t so expensive in the UK I’d happily do it too :D

Mobile sites are the the new handsets sellers world wide. Many people will change their old phones to get on the Google or Yahoo.

Ajay (who has gone awol last couple of months) was going to build a mobile stylesheet for WP - much better than a plugin.

If Ajay completed that, it would be amazing! :)

I still haven’t figured out why wp-mobile.php isn’t working. I’m sure I’ve followed the instructions correctly but maybe I mis-read it.
