User Details Embedded In DRM-Free iTunes Tracks

Although Apple iTunes now has DRM free mp3s available at a premium price, this doesn’t mean that users are now free to share the tracks. Apparently iTunes embeds within the mp3 file details of the person who purchased the track. Theoretically this means that iTunes could report back to Apple that User X’s library includes tracks purchased by User Y.

So, although you can play your tracks freely on other devices, this doesn’t mean you can share them with your friends. I’m sure though, that a utility will appear soon that will remove this information, or at least replace it with dummy details.

Interesting way to fight piracy, but I agree that people will still find a way to crack it.

People will always find a way to crack anything that can be downloaded offline like this. That’s why I will always stick to the point, that if the music industry insists on “DRMed” music, then subscription based tunes is the ONLY way to go.

People will obviously find a way around it, but it certainly sounds like a decent and interesting attempt to prevent the casual copier.
