It’s been a while since I’ve run a competition, so I’m going to run another one this month and I’d running a mini competition this week to find a format. What I’m looking for is a format that will encourage some of my search engine visitors to subscribe to my feed, as well as something that regular readers will want to get involved with as well.

I have several ideas. You should make it into a “running” contest, meaning draw three random feed readers every month, maybe every 10th day? This ensures you that the readers doesn’t delete the feed after the contest
Another thing could be a treasure hunt on your site. This way the reader is “forced” to read several posts and that way find out how awesome this site is and grab your feed. This will give you a more stable and realistic feed reader base.

I’m currently trying to build a good reader base of my own and one of the things I originally tried doing was having a link to WhatIsRSS.com. Many of your search engine visitors may have heard of an RSS feed, but really have no idea what it is.
Maybe create a post and place it on your sidebar explaing what an RSS feed is, how you can subscribe to them, benefits, etc….
Maybe add more familiar buttons or a drop-down menu for various feeds. ie Bloglines, Google Reader, Pageflakes, etc…

Well, I’ve found that search engine visitors have a far greater likelihood of not knowing what RSS is in the first place. So you’ll probably want to ensure you promote both your feed AND make a clear email delivery option.
Most people who sign up for email lists aren’t expecting daily content delivered, though. What I’ve been doing is promoting email delivery of ‘daily posts’ (feed) and a weekly newsletter (straight email marketing).
The more research I do in this area tells me that RSS adoption is still only a small percentage of internet users (although some use it without knowing they use it). So it’s been important to deliver content in ways that all levels of users can understand.
Did that all make sense?!

I agree with the knowledge of our visitors to a rss feed. Most do not know how to put one on their site and do not know why they should subscribe. A post on this would draw the visitors attention to rss feeds and you could ask them to join the feed to see how it works.
As for a prize simply offer them a link from your site. We all know that is golden to website promotion.

As far as competition goes, I’ve previously mentioned Swamble.com so you already know about that but, if you are looking for prizes, perhaps I can be of assistance in offering the winner a free Wallhog. Let me know!
