Microsoft Advertising For Xbox360 Media Center Extender

Do you use your Xbox360 together with your Media Center? According to Microsoft not enough do and more importantly, Microsoft thinks it is because women doesn’t allow their men to do it.

A new ad campaign for Media Center Extender is going to change that, though I have my doubts.

The ad is attempting to appeal to women. The ad is shown on Xbox.com. Women are not on Xbox.com looking at the various pages. It reminds me of the TV-show “The King of Queens”.

Men could care less about planning for a party. We get some beer and food and that’s really all you need. I get the concept, women hold the purchasing power. If women like it, they will allow the men to buy it. I get it, but I think it is a shame to market Media Center by trying to appeal to women on Xbox.com. If it’s going to show after a rerun of “Friends” or “Oprah”,that is something different.

A lot of the recent commercials for new technology like Zune, iPhone and iPods are 30-seconds of interesting content that leaves you with the urge to search Google for more information. This ad didn’t do that. It is long and dull and the couple never mention Media Center. They said Xbox 360, not Media Center. The ad is for Media Center, not Xbox 360. I can’t help but wonder why they never mention it in a 3 minute ad. Maybe Microsoft should mention that you already have Media Center, if you have Vista. It does note it at the very end of the ad in text, along with the first and only mention that Media Center is actually doing the work here.

I think they should have given Chuck a remote instead of the controller. Why not show off the remote control for Xbox 360 while they are at it?

The other ads on Xbox.com are all pretty long, but the have some good demos of the video, photo and music features. It’s too bad about the Guide demo though, they show manual recording instead of showing the Guide, but of course the wife calls it my new digital VCR!

You can see all the ads on Xbox.com.

Do you use Microsoft Media Center? Is it connected with your Xbox360 or do you prefer to use XBMC? What did you think of the ad campaign?
