83% Of People In UK Use Online Dating Sites

View Comments June 18, 2007 | Everton

Have you ever used an online dating site? According to a survey by TopDates over half of the UK have registered at two dating sites, and 83% of people have been on a dating site at some point.

I have never used a dating site before, but a good friend of mine swears by match.com. At the moment it’s ruling his social life, and he’s meeting at least two women a week via the site, and is responding to queries every night via the site. I’ve had a few blind dates in the past, and the ones that weren’t for charity actually went quite well. Maybe, I should follow my friend’s lead and register with a few sites for fun.

  • So I guess the remaining 17% are either not searching or already hooked. 83% seems a bit to high considering the amount of people in the UK that visited dating sites in 2008.

    Thanks for sharing though.
  • I think 38% would be more accurate, interesting read by the way

I really doubt its 83%. Its biased for sure, like they probably combined Myspace and Facebook and those popular ones into it, which are not really for dating, but can be.

I personally don't use online dating, i just go around town, and can usually start getting dates right there.

I think its geared towards older people, with family obligations,or limited time. so they screen out people who would otherwise object.

I still don't really know anyone who actually USES it.

This is propoganda to try and get rid of the social stigma and lingering suspicion that there is something inherently wrong with the sort of people that use these sites. An academic research came up with a figure of 4% of women who would actually concider online dating as a viable option. The users of these get addicted, sure, meeting 4 women a week, but you could do that serving and McDonalds :-)
  • It’s a great example for the fact that in the internet era, the nature of social life has changed for ever…

too true. Even I'm starting to catch on - I organised date online last week after I finally registered with Facebook

  • Well it say that 50% have registered and 83% have been on a dating site before which does not mean that they have been using their own Internet account for it. I personally find it really interesting that they mention the 50% which has been probably computed by adding the members of both sites.

If that is the case the figure might be lower than that. There are surely many users who registered on both sites. As you can see, I doubt these figures.. They want to make it seem like something normal, that everyone does and I think it is not.
  • Hmmm… I didn’t think 83% of people in the UK (or any other country) even had Internet access?

Good point - internet penetration in the UK is only about 70%

Jennifer and I actually ran an online dating site for over 3 years before starting our Dating & Relationship advice column. We're having a lot more fun with this one.

    Have an awesome day!
