Games Domain To Launch Service That Will Download Games In Minutes
I spotted a story in the Financial Times yesterday, that said that Game Group who are the largest independent video games retailer in the UK, was going to announce a partnership with Games Domain International that will reduce the time taken to download games from several hours to minutes.
I would like to know how GDI’s technology is able to achieve this, and why they are focusing only on games. Although most broadband connections are fast enough to cope with downloading music, we could all do with a bit more speed, particularly as lossless files are in the 20-30MB range. GDI’s technology would also be fantastic for videos.
Any idea how they are achieving this? GDI’s website is virtually non-existent, so I couldn’t find any clues there.

from what i managed to find on this, the technology is a game engine. instead of downloading
the physics engine(a behemoth) that drive the game and then the world(a particular configuration and data used by that engine) you will only need to download the world since the engine is generic. this is somewhat resembles second life.
obviously this will not work for video nor music.
