AllOfMP3 Shut Down By The Russian Govenrnment – What Are The Alternatives?

View Comments July 4, 2007 | Everton

Allofmp3.com have finally bitten the dust, and has been shut down by the Russian Government. They fought as long as they could, but Allofmp3.com really didn’t stand a chance once the World Trade Organisation starting threatening to block Russia’s entry because of their activities.

I’m very interested to know where my users tend to get their music from. Do you get all of your music from 100% legal sources like iTunes, or do you use semi-legal services that have sprung up to carry on where Allofmp3.com left off? Or do you use services like BitTorrent, Usenet or other illegal services?

If you’re worried about ‘outing’ yourself then just use a fake email address or ‘Anon’

  • There are many internationally based web sites like Allofmp3 which offers music download service, and are continually coming under pressure from other countries to shut down. i know more 19 store or service that provides the best digital music experience at lens http://www.squidoo.com/review_russianmp3site .
  • Allofmp3 was best, because has no drm and real time encoding - from 192 to 320 kbps I

liked "him". But russian mp3 stores it is whole world, about existense you don't know,

  • Although its illegal to download songs from sites, there are lot of sites which still offer for free download. There are also some personal sites which have uploaded songs.
  • Have just discovered that the freely downloadable Alltunes software, which used the allofmp3 engine, still works.

My account & balance were still intact, and have had no problems downloading stuff today.

The wikipedia entry for allofmp3 speculates that mp3sparks.com was down because of a massive traffic spike caused by the news, rather than anything more sinister.
  • No Site Names!

I don't think they should allow these kind of illegal sites.

  • 3gp, it's not illegal to download mp3s. It depends on what copyright they use.

I mention some sites over at The Far Corner where you can download music completely legally:

  • I think there will always be sites similar to this. Where there is a willing marketplace with eager consumers and money to be made, you cannot hold back those who will try.
  • i don't know, i don't think there is too much anyone can do to keep these sites completly down.. i mean theres always a way around it, and they will spring up again is some other fashion.
  • Mosey
I'm proud to say that I've purchased all the CDs released from my favourite band. - from Japan If CDs weren't so expensive in the UK (with reference to HMV and those 'large' companies, since Play and such rock) I think they'd actually make an impact in reducing downloading.
  • Honestly, I still get my mp3s from CDs I buy. What I do is use services like Rhapsody or XM Radio or Radio Blog Club, listen to music that I think I would like (say the tracks of a CD) and if I like it, I go to the store and buy it and then rip the tracks. Does this make me old school?
