Virgin Media Sign Deal To Stream Football Over Broadband And Mobile

Virgin Media announced yesterday a deal with the Football League to stream footage over broadband and mobile. A mixture of live footage and highlights will be available.

I know that Virgin Media are working hard on acquiring content to try and stop the huge numbers of customers that are deserting and being the first to stream live football is a nice move, but I’m just not excited about watching Football League content. Even buying the rights to MLS Soccer would have been more interesting, as at least I could keep tabs on how Beckham is getting on in America.

Rather than being one of the frontrunners since the merger of Telewest and ntl, Virgin Media aren’t even in the game at the moment in my view. BSkyB and BT are publishing fantastic results at the moment. When you look at BT’s and BSkyB’s broadband net ads in the last quarter they are virtually capturing the whole market, which isn’t leaving a lot left for Virgin Media and I think things are only going to get worse.

    Why do you think people are not willing to subscribe for mobile content?

    Over broadband is something that I would admire. But over mobile is nothing but plain irritating. It ruins the whole experience

    @Yael

    I think people are increasingly willing to subscribe to content over mobile, particularly the younger generation. It’s just that the content still isn’t very good!
