Case Study: Choosing The Right Keywords Generated $6k In 5 Months
If you run services that solely depend on the internet then your whole business model resolves around online marketing and traffic. Most people say traffic is money, but what good if the traffic doesn’t convert?
Getting targeted traffic is the dream of every webmaster when people start online business they spend huge bucks on online advertising and marketing to create blog buzz. Purchasing PPC ads can be expensive, and when the campaigns stop the traffic can dry up. I believe in trying to generate long term profit with less effort, so as the time passes by I can start on other projects.
To test my own expertise in SEO field, I decided to dive into a market which is one of the most competitive industry - Domain Registration. As you know there are already big giants in the industry both in US and UK. I choose UK industry as I already have contacts in the market which could help me find a client who is willing to invest in a dead site.
The task was quite challenging as the owners didn’t want to invest further in design, as the site wasn’t making any money. The site had no on page optimization - the main page was full of images and a little text. This made my task even more difficult.
So, I did some research into the industry and I compared and matched the price plans of competitors who were offering services that were 2-3% cheaper than others. To drive traffic to the site I had to chose the right keywords in order to build traffic, but that would also convert well.
The keywords I choose were “Buy Domain Name†and “Domain Nameâ€. Both the keywords were popular searches and if I could start ranking good, I would get a lot of sales.
Why I choose those keywords:
- ‘Buy Domain Name‘ - Contains the word ‘buy’, which means that the visitor is already set his/her mind to purchase the domain name so it would have a good conversion rate
- Competitor Analysis - Found those that ranked well for the keyword and did an analysis of their link building campaigns
- Review the competitor’s offers
- Worked hard to find related news worth stories and Bloggers who are willing to write a review
The results in less than 5 months:
- Site is ranking No.1 for the Term “buy domain name†in Google.co.uk (http://www.domainexpress.co.uk)
- Number of domain orders has sky rocketed
The above example will help you understand how important keyword selection is when starting the SEO process. If the right keywords are chosen at the start of campaign, then it will benefit the business for many years to come.
Have you had any similar success stories? Or if you have any suggestions I would love to listen to them. In my future articles I will explain some of the tactics I have adopted to build links.

The website homepage is nothing but an image. So, without text how did you get ranked #1 in Google.uk? We all know that search engines do not read images.
I noticed that you bought lots of paid inbound link with your keyword. Is this the only secret?

Becuase it quite clearly says ‘real names only’ in the comment form - I’ve had enough of people trying to abuse my dofollow generosity
