24Meg truely unlimited. Obviously this depends on the distance between you and your local exchange, but I regularly find that I’m getting 1.3Mbps. Only downside was the need to change back to a BT line

@John.. re: downloading very big torrents.. hmm well tbth.. most of us are talking about legal downloading and not piracy.. it is people like you who are the reason why there are caps put in the first place..

I have to agree with you all on the capping it is well out of order, like i do download alot and do torrents ect, like now im downloading the probably 2 biggest torrents ever 162 gig and 276 gig and im on 20 meg, upside i started last night and done 37 gig already so hopefully wont take too long, torrent is a load of movies in 2 torrents, but i do wish they stop the capping and just let us download what we want, lol if there wasnt movies utube music and just basic webpages we all be happy with 1 or 2 meg connections but since we are getting more and more available we need the speed, but overall i have had a good time with virgin, telewst, or ntl but to download 37 gig in 12 hours or so imo even being capped for 4 is good

im almost finished but i tried being sly with virgin so i started my download at about 2pm so that it would finish by 4pm which is when the second capping takes place, (first being between 10am to 3pm) but it didnt work and now its only got 1 gig left but its taking da micky in downloading, im not even being capped to 5mb its like 1mb/2mb

It’s not proper ‘fibre-optic’ either, that would be if the cable coming into your computer or at least modem was fibre-optic, but it isn’t. The cable coming from my street is a bit dodgy, meaning my speeds are slowed by 1/5. When the upload bandwidth is only 500K on a 10Mb connection, you need all you can get. Virgin’s Engineer arrived outside the time-slow and couldn’t solve the problem. Real fibre optic would solve these problems at least. Virgin are 90% marketing department, 5% Indian tech support robots and just 5% network engineers, maintenance etc. Or so it seems.
However, being in one of the better, former-Telewest areas (best ISP in the UK bar none when I signed-up) I don’t have so many problems. Throttling is in place, but I do have to download stuff first.
If you don’t like it, you could get it for free instead (certain online sites sell certain network equipment to enable certain things). I have to say, the throttling download allowances are still too low, and the upload speeds too.

Annoyed, i am having the same problem as you. DO NOT CARE whether I download or upload AT ALL I am capped. And worse. From 2PM to next day morning 2am. I AM NOT even using computer and when i switch it on BAMMMMMMM I am capped. I don’t even do Torrents. And when I called they said OHHH you are a high end user. You use 2-3G a day. WHAT? I told them I DON”T even TORRENT. Browsing internet TAKE THAT much?? The man was speechless but he kept rambling about fair usage and me as high limite user etc. VIRGINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

I’ve noticed over the last week Virgin are capping me as soon as we go into the 10am to 9pm monitored time slot. Doesn’t matter what I have downloaded or uploaded, they are capping me right away.
Phoned them up about this and they said any capping would occur only if I went over thier limits. I explained that very day my PC had been off all night but as soon as is it went on at 11am I was being well and truly capped. The operator insisted I was either mistaken or (through implication) was lying.
Asked to speak to a supervisor, was told none was available.

Very dissapointing, after being a loyal customer for some 8 years now, to being treated in such a manner.

In any case I would urge people to keep an eye on their connection (use BWMeter to monitor DL/UPloads) and see if Virgin are capping you off by default during ‘peak’ as they are me.

Yeah I agree with you, although speeds for my area were limited anyway, but been with NTL for over 10 years, and had no problems with it, I have 10mb with VM at the moment but once you download about 700mb they cap you to 2mb speed, 2mb is ok but 10mb is so much better, 700mb gets used up by gameplay and youtube media sites in a few minutes, not enough, they say they want to stop piracy but why have 20mb?? when all you want to do is download, a 2mb service would be enough to listen to songs browse the internet and perhaps download 1 movie a week ,

Remember back in the old days, when I had a shared connection with my brother and sister sharing 150k, oh terrible speeds, but at the time it was great, then wow speed boost to 300k, now that was good, then to 750k then 1mb now were at 20mb, although other places in the world has over 100mb,

I may consider looking into WPA hacking so I can use my neibours 20mb service lol, anyway it is a scam because at these prices £25 a month, £35 a month that should pay for some of the piracy,

Technology allows all users to download at full speed and more. Virgin is quite useless with TV programs as they do not have Sky1, then Virgin does not have any proper HD channels (quite frankly I am bored of watching BBC HD test transmission). Even most of the recorded programs are not in HD.

The ONLY good thing with Virgin was that the internet was unlimited so you can watch whatever you like but now with internet capping, its really the final straw.

It is time to move back to SKY.

I am totally disgusted with Virgin media broadband service. I pay for 8meg with unlimited downloads. last month they capped me down to dial up speeds because they said that i downloaded 10 gb in a week. 4 weeks later and they have capped me down to dial up speeds again but this time its because I used 5.9gb downloads, the goal post seems to have nearly halved!
In actual fact their policy is that they will cap the top 5% of users every week. which has a knock on effect that because the top 5% are capped the usage drops but they still cap the top 5% again so it drops still further. pretty soon they will be capping you as soon as you connect!
I am getting out, and I hope that Virgin go bust because I am sure that they will be losing a great many of their customers as a result of this policy. and as the top users leave that will just bring the top 5% figure still lower again!
They are a crap company, STAY WELL CLEAR OF THEM!

Totally agree with everyone. but it seems all we can do, is come to sites like this and complain to make ourselves feel a little better?Surely if they have to cap your speed (mine is 2MB and very often capped to 1MB) then they should partly refund your monthly cost. As in your contract it states the speed of broadband that they will supply you, and if they lower the speed they are supplying you, isnt it illegal to still charge you full price? would a company selling half a product for full price get away with it (Virgin excluded OBVIOUSLY).. its shocking that nobody is willing to lock horns with Virgin over this daylight robbery! I will 100% be leaving as soon as this ball and chain of a contract ends! VIRGIN! my arse, why does it feel like ive been raped by them then! stay clear of virgin!

totally agree with dave on comment 29. i order 512k years ago from blueyonder, then years after i got free upgrade from 512k – 1mb – 2mb, then came the take-over from virgin media. don’t mention free upgrade any more, well customer services are getting worse and here goes speed capping. it’s all going downhill. right now, it’s 0.35 midnight that i’m writing this. my speed is still capped at 110k (250k max on 2mb virgin media). out of order, talking about breaking the contract, rules or whatever agreements, you just start it out. i love blueyonder, but it’s gone. RIP. will try to order bt line then go for sky 3 in 1 package. only about 26.5 quid a month. which ones better? surely you can work it out.

They seem to cap ppl now at 4pm exactlly regardless of wether you downloaded 1mb or 1gig – its seems if you hit a certain speed at that time the automated system cuts your speed down- its ruined my online gaming everythign- time to move to BT

I’m glad I’m not the only one feeling robbed ! Yes robbed, I paid Â£37 for the connection for over seven years with telewest and that was for a unlimited 4mbit/sec then 10mBit & finally 20mbit/sec.

By reducing the line speed with bandwidth shaping (capping) they are charging me for 20mbit/sec even that between 4.00pm & 12.00am I’m limited to 5mbit (and yes on 20mbit 3GB is reached in 20min approx). Charging for a service with strings full 24hrs x 365 days @ 20mbit but restricting the service is theft. Richard Branson aka Virgin need to listed to Telewest and give the customers back there service.

I’ve reduced my Cable package to the lowest and now use the saved money for a ADSL provider so I get 2 broadband connections. If they ever phone me with telesales I tell them to sort their act out, then I’ll consider extras.

They are the dumbest cable company in the UK and thanks to there dumb approach, they are loosing revenue like a leaking bucket.

My normal internet use is after work just in the 4.00pm to 12.00am cap period… Now rumors are flying they think they can raise the band to 40-50mbit, what a joke and cap you for 12 hours…

The most reasonable “Acceptable Use Policy” i have found has been Eclipse Broadband. They are slightly more expensive than most but the what you see is what you get. Descent reliable staff, no call queues and the speed advertised is the speed you’ll get. They rock.

The only altern to cable and ADSL I can think of are the wireless broadband guys (can’t remember the name) who don’t have a lot of coverage. Out of the ADSL guys if you are looking for speed go for BE internet who do unlimited 20MB for Â£18 – a BT line will add Â£11.75 to the cost, taking the total Â£29.75

Totally agree with all you guys, the only way we can demonstrate our dislike is to switch providers. Everything was fine before, except every month the network goes down due to the inferior NTL basis. I also agree that we should continue to get the service we originally signed up for, in some of our cases, we have had the same service from NTL for years.

Funnily, Virgin Media sent me loads of surveys to fill in, none of the questions said “Do you want 20mb broadband as long as its capped?!”

What annoyed me was even before I was upgraded to the so called 20MB service.. I was paying 37.?? a month for many months when I should surely have been only paying the 35 quid for the 10MB service I was currently on. Now I have the 20MB service..well where do I start.. I am not exactly a heavy user as far as downloading is concerned and my understanding was that it was only to be 5% of users especially heavy users (sorry for repeating the heavy user clichÃ©).. But even I am capped to a rediculous speed and it is more annoying especially if I need to download security updates or a tool to remove a virus and yes I have even had my downloads freeze while the the rate is being re-calculated.. *insert frustrated smiley*

I just got that aswell.I had been uploaing my torrent at about 60kbs for about 100 hrs then at about 4 BANG! and i was actually watching the speed graph at that very moment in utorrent it dropped down to 10kb/s and its still like that now .Before that i could download at 500kb/s now 100kb/s.This is not good when there is about 40 people who are depending on YOU!How can they possible call this unlimited!
