02 Pull The Plug On i-mode Service Blaiming Device Limitations
O2 pulled the plug on its i-mode service, citing that ‘a limited range of devices has restricted its growth and we don’t see that changing’. I found this very surprising as I really think handsets are close to being able to deliver services that the mass market will want to use, and doubly surprising as O2 have shelled out a small fortune to get the iPhone!
Slowly, but surely people are starting to realise that they can do more with their phones than just make calls, and increasing numbers of my friends are accessing their email, IM and favourite sites on their phones. With 3G people seem to have stopped complaining about the speed being too slow, and unlimited tariffs are finally giving users the confidence to give services’a go’.

haa!. O2 was just too late to identify this. iMode is just workable in Japan. Nowhere else it is widespread and their observation about lack of device support is just common sense. They should concentrate their efforts on coming out with a wi-max enabled handset first.
