Barclaycard Introduce Contactless Credit Card In London

Barclays have signed up more than 1,000 London shops in London which will be able to accept a new contactless credit card, Barclaycard OnePulse. Shoppers will be able to pay for items up to £10 just by swiping their card like with the Oyster travelcard, although transactions over £10 will still require a chip and pin to be entered.

I hope that Lloyds TSB launch their equivalent contactless card soon, as I try to pay for as many items as possible using my credit card to collect airmiles. I hate paying carrying cash, and I think that if I wasn’t catching so many cabs at the moment because I haven’t got a car for a few more weeks, or if I didn’t have to pay for my lunch in the staff canteen, I wouldn’t carry more than ten pounds on me on average. Even at the moment, I only tend to carry £20 on me at a time. I obviously take more than that out at a time from cashpoints, but I tend to leave it home and only carry £20 with me at a time.

I do think that £10 is too small an amount for the new Barclaycard OnePulse to be really useful, although I’m assuming that Barclaycard have thought long and hard about it. £10 doesn’t go very far in London these days, and would only cover buying very small items or a takeaway lunch. As a consumer, I’d probably want a £25 limit, but I guess the fraud risk is unacceptable at that limit.

  • Be wary. There are cretins out there with card scanners that can capture your data from a distance. Then when you get home, you'll be shocked at $10,000 in purchases from Uzbekistan that you never made!
  • I do not like to carry cash either, but as credit gets easier to use I get a little more nervous about what could happen if I lose a card.

UK seems to pioneer credit card options as far as I can tell, too.
  • Great news, this would save a lot of time on the way to work in the mornings. The oyster cards worked a wonder when I used to goto college.

    Thanks for sharing.
  • I agree that a sightly higher limit would be more useful. It is nice though to not have to wait and provide a signature for small purchases. As far as fraud goes, if it is kept to a minimum, the credit companies will just accept it as a cost of doing business while providing a service that consumers want.
