Computer Cleaning Week: Clean Your Desk!
Everton | Aug 21, 2007 | Comments 8
I just read a scary statistic:
71% of office workers believe their dirty workspace is making them ill and ‘hot desking’ is a major culprit for spreading bugs throughout the office. What’s more, 80% admitted that they share they’re workstations, including computer and phone with at least one other colleague, spreading germs further.
I have to admit I’ve never considered how many germs are breeding on my mobile phone or computer. I’m thinking now about how many times I’ve sneezed and coughed on my phone….
Luckily 17th-22nd is Computer Cleaning Week and I’m definitely going to get my house in order then. It’s probably going to take that long to clean my work area!

you can consider the “5S” theory
It’s very important to keep the computer absolutely clean and virus free. As germs in the house can cause us damage the same way the viruses in the comp can damage our data.
Those statistics are pretty damn scary. Although mind you are 97.278% of statistics are made up after all.
XD
lack of computer hygiene… reminds me of a hilarious comic on xkcd.
(don’t know if I’m allowed to deeplink to them here, so: go to xkcd -> archive -> search for comic #237 “Keyboards are Disgusting”).
All statistics aside, have you ever stoipped to think how many office workers are sitting in their cubicles secretly picking their noses over their keyborads, and then answering the phone, not washing hands….and so on. *shudder*
@Angie
One thing that I find really disgusting in offices is seeing how many people don’t wash their hands in the loo, or just use water and no soap – do they expect the germs to just fall off their hands somehow?
To make it worse, they’ll then go and buy a sandwich for lunch, again without washing their hands…..
I cleaned up my computer and desk last week. It was becoming a mess. :D
Don’t just worry about the germs and physical dirt! There’s something more insiduous: EMF. This can wreak havoc from the inside out.
