103″ Plasma

Welcome to the first edition of Bloggers Cribs!

Every week Bloggers Cribs will be feature one blogging ’superstar’, who will let us briefly into their homes to share what gadgets and other electronic delights they have dotted around their home.

So, if you want to see what kit they use to dish up the words that keep you captivated everyday, or if you just want to see how they how they wind down, or how they spend their Adsense cheques, then read on!

To kick off Blogger Cribs we have Matt Craven, one of the Principals of Bryghtpath LLC, a boutique web 2.0 firm located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Matt was previously the Senior VP, Online Services for Problogging, Inc. and the publisher of The Blog Herald which is where he made his name.

I’ve never met Matt, but judging by the HUGE number of items in his gadget bag, I’m convinced he must have a hunched back!

Where do you live Matt?

I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

PC or Mac and why?

Both :)

I use the PC for gaming, banking (quickbooks), and a few other PC only purposes. The Mac (Macbook Pro and Powermac G4) is used for everything else.

23inchHow many PCs do you own?

  • Macbook Pro, 3GB RAM, 120GB HD, 17″ Widesceen + 30″ Apple Cinema HD Display
  • Dell XPS P4 gaming machine - Dual 20″ LCD
  • Powermac G4 w/ 23″ Cinema Display + 19″ Studio Display

What PC rig do you use to manage your site?

The Macbook Pro primarily.

IE or Firefox?

Firefox.. because there isn’t anything better

What mp3 player do you own?

Apple iPod 60GB + 1GB Shuffle + 4GB iPhone.

How big is your mp3 collection?

5400 songs and about 20 videos

Object of Desire - what gadget would you buy if money was no option?

I’d get a new Mac Pro desktop for the podcasting stuff we’re doing. We can afford it, but it just doesn’t make sense right now.

What has been your most outrageous gadget purchase?

Probably when I dropped $6k on our Powermac G4 setup back in 2000.

How many TVs do you own? How big is your biggest screen?

42″ Widescreen (tube though, not LCD). 3 TVs total.

What kit do you have in your main AV Centre?

Bose surround sound processor w/ 7 speakers, 42″ Widescreen television.. nothing too sexy there (sounds sexy to me - EB)

Xbox 360, Wii or PS3?

Believe it or not I never got into console gaming…

What game are you currently playing?

World of Warcraft

Favourite game of all time?

Probably world of warcraft - it’s the first game that I’ve invested this much time in.. and I really enjoy the sense of community that it provides.

What gadget are you looking to buy in the next year?

Probably that mac Pro…

iPhoneWhat mobile(s) do you own? Why did you choose that model?

  • 4GB iPhone
  • Treo 700wx

I like both of these for different reasons - the iPhone is the best converged device that I’ve ever seen. The Treo is the best overall business focused mobile device. I carry both…

What gadgets do you carry around in your gadget bag?

  • Apple iPod - 60GB version from two generations ago. Currently using 56GB. At work, I dock it into a stereo rig. Otherwise, I use the Shure e4c headphones - expensive, but worth it.
  • Apple iPod Shuffle (Silver) - I use this when working out or hitting the road on the bicycle.
  • Palm Treo 700wx - this is my domestic cell phone / PDA. It syncs wirelessly using Sprint’s EVDO broadband to our Microsoft Exchange servers - providing me with email, contacts, and other information wherever I am.
  • Apple Macbook Pro 17″ - My trusty 2005 Powerbook G4 died on me earlier this year on a trip to Dallas. This is the latest one - unfortunately not the most current line of Macbook Pro though. Upgraded to 3G of RAM.

    mac

  • Apple iPhone - my personal & international cell phone. My work phone number forwards over to this phone - making it the onestop shop for communications wherever I am.
  • Levenger Notebook - I use leather three-ring binder from Levenger to hold my daily schedule, executive summaries, tasks, and various notes as I motor throughout my day. Some of my forms are custom made using Abode Illustrator. I’m also a huge fan of Dave Seah’s Printable CEO series.
  • Moleskine Reporter Pocket Notebook - I carry this when I’m highly mobile - it primarily serves as my portable task list.
  • Moleskine Reporter Large Notebook - I use this for notetaking and meetings, etc. I began using these when I moved to our headquarters in 2005 - I now have 6 of them filed away in the desk. It’s helped me never lose my notes!
  • Sprint Broadband Card - this is used with my work laptop (not listed) to connect to the internet in order to sync up email, etc. when traveling.

If you could keep only one gadget, what would it be?

Easy choice.. the Macbook Pro

Well, there we have it. So, if you ever see Matt struggling around Minneapolis with his heavy gadget bag, then please stop and give the poor fella a hand!

Next week I’ll be featuring another celeb blogger. Let me know if there’s any one you want to see in a future Bloggers Cribs, and Everton’ll will try and fix it.
