Thanks for this, I was thinking about buying such a phone.

Can you recommend another model/brand then? I know there are not that many GPS-enabled phones on the market at the moment, so it's difficult to make a right choice.

Feedback will be greatly appreciated; I am a conservative person and I change my devices rarely, I'd rather not buy a phone at all if I knew it is not working well.

Hi
I have used the navigation system of nokia n 95. its really horrible. once i was travelling from coventry to London and in M1 the navogator asked me to turn back to coventry. it was fun becoz there was no gate to turn through M1. also once the navigator asked me to go ahead while no street ahead it was only T junction. I and my friends compared my navigator of nokia n95 with thier external tomtom navigator for nokia 73. my navigator was 100% fals and bad.
so i am going to refund my money back. i do not like to travel to France while i go to London !

the gps itself is fine, the software on the other hand is very basic but it is not meant to be anything else. as someone said, they are offering a phone with many features, it can be hard to get every single one of them spot on.

BUT if you plan on using the GPS seriously, rather than just every now and again to find out where you are when you are lost then the excellent mobile version of "route 66" works perfectly on the N95 and TomTom are working on getting their mobile version working on it too so if you plan on using the GPS a lot, one of them would be a much better choice than the software built into the n95.

both of which would be cheaper software options than buying a standalone GPS device. To buy the software (€59.99 for the UK) is actually cheaper than the 3 year plan for the Nokia software too, but I'm not sure how long you can update the maps for before you have to pay more.

IMHO recently Nokia only takes money but not replace quality as some years ago. And if we won't see to name that can find better device for smaller money.

Comparing to other set such as sony ericsson, Nokia have a poor quality in image and also have a low sound. To hear the music the sony ericsson set is good rather than nokia. But things can change tommorow may be the best will become nokia tommorow.

My policy is not to believe in all the claims they put in for their products, blindly. I'll buy a product only after it stands the test of time. But, of course there should be some customers who are to be the testers of a new product. Nokia is a reputed company . It should not have let this happen. But I appreciate the Nokia Company because they are positive in accepting their technological mistake and are promptly giving the refunds, without any evasive replies. This shows the nobleness of the Nokia people.

Hey there's nothing so strange about a well reputed company refunding when their customer is not satisfied. To survive in this competitive world they have to very flexible and appealing to the customers.Nokia's service has proved their standards and this will in turn enable them to attain customers.

No doubt Nokia N95 is a great phone with mp3 player, camera and mobile browsing, etc. but it still has a long way to go as far as GSP facility goes. By refunding, Nokia with their partner Openbit managed to retain customer faith but to in order to maintain their position over other competitors they will need to rectify their shortcoming in terms of GSP and in the future better test the functionality of their products before launch. Nokia N95 is still a good buy with lots of great features but provided your not banking on its GSP function.

There is absolutely no doubt Nokia N95 is a great phone with mp3 player, camera and mobile browsing, etc. but it still has a long way to go as far as GPS facility goes.

Nokia N95 is still a good buy with lots of great features but provided your not banking on its GPS function. For the moment, i think we are better of buying SAT NAV's

Nothings perfect!!! Must say excellent response time by Openbit...But everyone wants the best and Nokia seems doing a bad job in providing...Motorola, Sony Ericsson are proving to e showcase an excellent number of features and at a better price. Nokia as a brand has been way over-rated and but user reviews are slaughtering their latest masterpieces. Look out for the Nokia Prism!!!!Another one that might BOMB in the cellular market...:P

Nokia is too big a company to quibble over such issues. Besides for the fact that Nokia competes with many companies. The fact is that Nokia sees itself as a Market leader and not a product manufacturer or a service provider. Most of Nokia's software is made by smaller software firms. And with Nokia sourcing their camera's from zeiss and having their products manufactured all over the world. Nokia's core focus remains Brand development and enrichment.
"It's easy to get on the top, staying there takes work"
we have a local adage too, roughly translated
"the tree which bear fruits have their branches stooping humbly"

Recently Nokia was much in the news for a product recall of the faulty batteries fitted in some of their phones. As I recall this was done by the company itself and phone owners were invited to have their batteries replaced at the full cost (including home delivery if I recall correctly) to the manufacturer. I thought that was very scrupulous of the company even if it was the battery manufacturer and not Nokia itself who was going to bear the cost.

Since I anyway am a bit of a Nokia fan, here’s another reason for me to update my phone with another Nokia.

Glad you got a refund, even gladder I didn't pay for the gps service, I used to use an XDA orbit with built in GPS and it was wayyy better than the n95.

traffic updates are cool, problem with them is it only shows the traffic for your current planned journey, it would be nice if you could see the hotspots on the browse map function so you could see in advance before you plan a journey.

you used to be able to get free updates for traffic cameras from pocketgpsworld.com, turns out they have started charging for it! only 2 quid a month though

@Ramana you are correct same goes for the Exploding battery issued sometime back. Nokia responded very well there.
But i'm asking Nokia a question you should always test out a product before bring it to the consumer. More this things goes on more it will hurt their reputation. Atleast they should do beta testing on the software products.

Spot on. I think if they'd tried to defend the service or quibble I would have been very unhappy. As a result of Nokia's good service I will continue being a loyal Nokia customer (I've only had 3 non-Nokia handsets in 13 years).

Nokia competes with many other hand set manufacturers for an increasingly crowded market place. Like a successful marketeer, they have to innovate and offer better and newer features to stay ahead in this game.

In this particular instance it would appear that they have not ironed out all the bugs before the product itself was launched and hence the problems faced by customers on GPS use.

It is however to their credit that Nokia and their partner Openbit have addressed the customer complaint with speed, courtesy and apology. Hopefully, with such feed back, the product itself will be improved and lost customers regained.

My faith in Nokia, after having migrated to them from two other hand set manufacturers, has only been reinforced. The action taken by them is exemplary.

The TomTom speed camera updates are brilliant, well worth the money!

I was on a road that should have had a 70mph speed limit and didn't see the signs that it had dropped to 30mph (for no reason) until after a speed camera. Thankfully the TomTom warned me well in advance of the camera.

I didn't get the GPS with my N95 as I had the TomTom so can't comment on that but I do love the phone, really good for taking pictures and video on nights out (even in dark clubs).

N series is a really hyped up brand. For example the Nokia N73 Carl Zeiss lens which wear rated at 3.2 megapixel is really crap quality when compared to its nearest competitor the Sony ericsson K810i. I have checked the N73 photo quality myself its really very bad its try's to make the pictures better using contrasts and sharpness ratios buts its falls shorts on the quality the K810i gives. N series is just another hype from Nokia to get back its grasp on the market share its loosing to SE. Now same goes with the GPS system its slow, lousy and buggy!

Oh, I'm so glad i read this about the Nokia N95. I have a N series phone too and was going to upgrade to the N95 model which they portray (in the ads) as a phone which is ' lot of things rolled in one'. But now that you've mentioned how bad the GPS is of this phone and also many others have also complained of the same, then it's a better choice not to buy this and go for another phone with GFS facility. Though i do appreciate the fact that Nokia did refund the money that you'd paid for your GPS navigation license.
