Feedback On Paged Comments Please

As some of you know I’m in the midst of getting a new theme built from scratch. Hopefully I’ll have something to share publicly soon, as I really want to get feedback from as many people as possible.

Zath has just given me some feedback on my use of Paged Comments via email which has been raised before by Daniel from DailyBlogTips:

One thing that has always puzzled me a little about your site - well it’s a minor annoyance to me anyway - why have you got the paged comments? Is it a performance thing to do with the theme? So with a new theme would it still be needed? Or is it a way of increasing page views? It just means there’s quite a few clicks to read a new comment on a post I’ve already commented on, is there a way of putting a link to the latest comment in the notification email perhaps?

I use the paged comments plugin (all the plugins I use) because I hate scrolling down posts with lots of comments, rather than as a way to increase page views. The additional page views it generates are probably minimal.

Does the paged comments annoy you? Does it stop you leaving comments? What features would make you leave more comments on the site? As a temporary move I have increased the number of comments per page from 5 to 10, but I’m happy to remove the plugin altogether.

    @pchere

good point about not being able to see your own comment. I think I’m going to look into getting something built along the lines of #26’s suggestion

I have to click “show all comments” to see my comment also. So I personally do not prefer it.

Paged comments has always been a problem for me. I always find myself clicking “show all comments” before I can get a full idea of the discussion before commenting. I guess it is just one more click, but web users are impatient people. :-)

Pagination set at 20 is good .
An idea came to my mind what if you could create a ajax based slider for comments…by clicking “show more comments” all comments will be visible without reloading page and would be best for everyone.I think that will not be hard for any professional ajax coder.

You can ask your designer to do that ..also it would be unique to your site.

    I’ve fixed the link.

I think I’ve hit the right compromise with pagination set at 20 Shashank

Looks like it’s got ‘http’ in the link address twice.

Also the link “all the plugins i use” is not working.

personally i hate paged comments it would be great if you could remove that plugin.
Better get a poll on the sidebar to ask your readers if they want paged comments or not.
I bet most of the readers won’t like paged comments.

    It really annoys

I think that the ‘practice’ I use for subscribe to comments is a fair one, and is actually the way most other commenting systems work. In fact, many others won’t send further updates out until you visit the site
