10 Things You Need To Know About WordPress 2.3

WordPress 2.3 is released on Monday. The key new feature that is being added to WordPress 2.3 is tagging, so a plugin will not be required. However, it looks like the WordPress team have decided to not add a lot of tagging functionality initially, so I think I will continue using the brilliant Simple Tagging plugin.

If you’re looking for a plain English version of what else is new in WordPress 2.3, then check out 10 Things You Need To Know About WordPress 2.3. Another new feature that I’ve just spotted are (finally!) Update Notifications of new WordPress versions and also plugins.

If you do decide to use the WordPress 2.3 tagging feature, then weblog tools collection have already discovered a few plugins out there that add additional tagging functionality to WordPress 2.3:

  1. Advanced Tag Entry lets you choose tags from a drop-down list to your posts, remove tags you’ve already added to your posts, create new tags, edit tags, and delete unused tags from the database.
  2. Click Tags adds a clickable list of existing tags above the native tag field on the Write screen. This is a great plugin if you have only a handful of tags you use.

Clicktags sounds good to me! I’m still a diehard UTW fan, so am VERY reticent about switching to 2.3. I might wait for a little while till it’s stable though. The thing is, UTW results give me VERY good SE ranking, and I don’t want to compromise that by switching over suddenly. Especially after the Technorati vs. Google incident, where Technorati’s results dropped off the face off the earth with tags. Not sure what would happen for WordPress tags! It would be useful to find out if I’m being too silly over this >_
