MyBlogEarnings For November 2007
If you’re new to the blog my old MyBlogEarnings reports are available, as well as my Guide To Making Money Online With Blogging. The guide is worth checking every month or so, as I update it every couple of weeks or so.
November was a disappointing month for Connected Internet. After a record October, I was getting ready to set myself up for a strong November, but things don’t always work out the way you expected.
I took over a new team at work (this blog is maintained in my spare time!) and within 3 hours a major disaster occurred which required me to literally work around the clock for around a week, then a few things happened in my personal life that required a lot of attention, and then I got shipped out to San Francisco at short notice. All in all this meant that I wasn’t able to write many posts in November, complete the new site theme, or devote enough time to closing the direct ad approaches that I received.
Earnings Report For November 2007
Note: Figures for last month are in brackets.
- Google Adsense: $3,661 ($4,904)
- Intellitxt: $1,912($1,774)
- Text-Link-Ads: $1,810 ($1,888)
- Tribal Fusion: $1,344 ($1,160)
- Direct Ad Sales: $510 ($4,692)
- Linkworth: $168 ($168)
- ReviewMe: $150 ($0)
- Feedburner FAN: $80 ($251)
- TNX $69 ($343)
Grand Total: $9,705 ($15,179)
I’ve been so busy this month that I haven’t even been tracking my earnings so until today I didn’t know how much I’d earned in November. I’m disappointed that I’ve had my biggest ever earnings fall of 36%, although in hindsight this isn’t too bad given how little I’ve posted.  Despite the limited posts my traffic only fell 6% to 533K page impressions which isn’t bad, especially as November only has 30 days.
Disappointments For The Month
Number Of Posts
I’ve already explained why I wasn’t able to post much in November, but unfortunately this also coincided with the rest of the team not posting much either. I’m not sure if this was because I wasn’t doing my usual chasing, or because they saw that I wasn’t posting much.
Adsense
My Adsense earnings were trickling along jsut fine last month and I was set to break $5k for the first time, but then Adsense changed which sections within ads were clickable. I can’t fault them for what they have done as clearly some users were clicking on ads by mistake - I just hope that higher CPMs from advertisers will make up some of the earnings loss in the future.
Direct Ad Deals
I think this is the area I’m most disappointed in this month. Looking through my emails to work out how much I made in November, made me realise how many approaches I actually had that I didn’t followup on. I really wish I’d found the time to do this, and hopefully these companies will still want to advertise with me in December.
Successes For The Month
Traffic
I’m amazed that my traffic only fell 6%, which was very reassuring. However, I think this is one of the reasons that given how tired I was, I wasn’t incentivised to write new posts.
Earnings
Apart from the fall in Adsense and Direct Ad Sales my earnings from other schemes were very strong. It was great to see that my ‘investment’ in Connected Internet is generating an income of over $100K pa, even if I ’stop working’. I would love to think that Connected Internet will still be here in 30 years, as that would make a great pension plan!
Plans For Next Month
As a result of a poor November, I really feel the need to work my ass off in December. I have 2 weeks off over the Christmas period where I was planning on just chilling out on hols, but I’m going to take my laptop with me so I can work on the site. I also have a big intellitxt referral in the pipeline that I’m hoping to get accepted this month.
Key targets:
- Find a better alternative ad scheme than Tribal Fusion
- Recruit one more team member
- Finish the new theme and de-bug it
- Try and recruit a sales manager
I hope that the amount of information I have shared here will encourage you to do the same (An alternative way is to tag your post ‘MyBlogEarnings‘ so that your details can be found easily on Technorati), or provide you with food for thought. The more info we share with each other, the more we will all hopefully make.If you are looking for some quick tips on generating more income from your site then check out my Guide To Making Money Online With Blogging.

Comment by alam on 4 December 2007:
great to see your post, I think you sick in last few days since no post from you.
welcome back
Comment by Brown Baron on 4 December 2007:
It’s great to see that even with the few posts, your traffic didn’t take a big hit. So that’s what you’ve been up to. I was wondering where you were.
Comment by Everton on 4 December 2007:
@Baron
Don’t worry, I’m still alive and back in the posting groove.
Comment by keikun17 on 4 December 2007:
the low 6% drop in traffic vs less post ratio could mean that you are getting more loyal readers this month.. so the highlights that november brought to you could have been them loyal readers.
Comment by Everton on 4 December 2007:
@keikun17
Nope. This site gets the majority of its traffic from search engines - thats why I get more traffic than some big name blogs like John Chow, but fewer loyal readers/RSS subs. The big drop in rev was due to Adsense changing its clickable area and the fact that I didn’t chase any direct advertisers - all the other schemes performed roughly the same.
It doesn’t mean I can rest on my laurels and pull in $10k a month forever, as without new posts getting new SERPs my traffic will die very quickly. This is what happened to this site in 2006 - I had the same amount of traffic back then (not as monetised though) but I sat back for around 9 months and it all went away.

This is still awesome.
I ma trying to carve out a living online. I luckily had record earnings in November. I was up approx 300% from October. But that’s easy when my earnings for October were only $50
Stll it’s a start for me….
Comment by Micah on 4 December 2007:
Great month, even though a bit lower than last month.
Yes, I would difinitely suggest that you start posting more this month. I’ve had the same thing happen to me…I’ve stopped posting as frequently for just a few weeks and my traffic to a huge nose dive.
Anyway, great job!
Comment by Paula Mooney on 4 December 2007:
Wonderful earnings still, despite the lower amount of posts.
Do you do any affiliate sales?
Your earnings could really pick up from those in December, too…
Take care,
Paula
Comment by Everton on 4 December 2007:
@paula
I’ve never been able to drive affiliate sales. I’ve tried doing the odd post but they never seem to pay off. If anybody can tell me how to drive affiliate sales I’ll be their best mate for life!
Comment by Selbourne Designing on 5 December 2007:
Wow! thats some impressive earnings. But what made you want to reveal the sites earnings to the world? Just inquisitive.
Comment by Everton on 5 December 2007:
@Selbourne
Because I’ve got nothing to hide, because it helps me plan, because it generates interest, but mainly because I want to help other bloggers. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve asked other bloggers how they’ve managed to do things, even those I considered friends, only to be told they won’t share their ideas or success. You’d be surprised by some of the names I could list!
Comment by Joseph Plazo on 5 December 2007:
10 grand isn’t something to sniff at. Some folks in the US earn that amount after a back breaking 8 to 5 job.
In many asian countries, 10 grand is a year’s salary!
You’re still flying high!
