That goes without saying. However, text ads look shabby and bring the design of the site down.

Of course you can have paid ad links. But just make them nofollow. They pay for the traffic not for the pagerank. And then Google won't be angry.

What about purchasing links from digitalpoint? Sometimes you can buy 500 links for a paltry $15 at that site. Imagine all the traffic from those in post links!

Yes, I agree with Shashank...good design is important, but getting the traffic there is priority #1.
However, I do agree with the point about getting private ads. They pay much, much more than run-of-the-mill ads (however, they're a little harder to get).

Pretty long post :)
I would say just keep focusing on content and traffic..and you will get a idea on how to monetise later .. having a website designed with monetization in mind is good if you already having lots of traffic :)

I did a brief news article Dec. 6th on a loudspeaker maker that was introducing two new models to their lineup. The manufacturer in question has been around since the 70's, is very respected, and is probably the single most copied designer in terms of DIY designs that have been modeled after their speakers. I'm thinking there is no shortage of references to their name on the internet.

After my Dec 6 article my 4 month old web site scores at the very top of page two on Google search results for the manufacturer's name, and a page one result for one of the loudspeakers I mentioned in my article, and another page one for the partial name of the same speaker.

I'm not trying to blow my own horn by dropping the above, merely pointing out that proper design and monetization has to be taken into consideration if SERPS matter to you. It can give your site a boost that would otherwise take you a long time to enjoy. I can't justify some of the SERPS I'm getting other than to think that I am doing things exactly the way Google wants me to- and that's fine by me because while direct traffic and referrals can generate a lot of visitors, Google sends me a steady and ever-increasing stream of incoming traffic.

The way I look at it, if Google feels I am doing things within their guidelines (and feels my content is worthwhile), my SERPS will be good, and the more content I generate, the more SERPS I will get. You can't dismiss the traffic the search engines are capable of sending your way. It's a bottomless well. Google may not give you the exciting bursts of traffic you can generate through social bookmarking sites, but the Google stream is consistent, and will make your site generate income. If I am seeing 80-100 people a day from Google now with approx. 140 entries in my sitemap, what will that number look like when I have a 1000+, 2000+, 3000+ entry sitemap?

I don't know, but I sure am looking forward to finding out, and I sure as heck am not going to intentionally do anything to keep me from reaping the benefits of my hard work when that time comes.

I haven't used Google's optimizer. I have tried different combinations over time, and have also infrequently checked clicks on various pages in Analytics. I have ads from private sponsors on my site, and I audit their performance, so I know which locations are receiving more clicks. Soon I will implement ad rotation as I ad more private sponsors, and I will get an even better snapshot of location performance as the locations won't be tied to a single advertiser.

Where can you get the heat maps? I have read a few times recently about them. I think that the idea of pursuing private sponsors may be the route I go when I try to monetize my site. It will allow me to control the relevance of what is being shown on the site. Thanks for the tips.

About your point on positioning, I am starting to try Google's new Website Optimizer for A/B testing on conversion to find out what types of advertising truly convert on my websites. Have you tried this version of A/B and multivariate testing?

If so, what have your results been?

As well...have you used heat maps in analyzing ads on your sites before?

Monetizing your site is great but it should fit with what you are doing and become a part of your design as you said. It really is better if it can actually add to your site. For example in Real Estate if you can monetize your site using the best lender in your area you will have a win -win situation.

I agree with the last point- text link ads destory goodwill with google. My pagerank5 site got devalued to PR0 after the last update- this despite 4000 backlinks!

I'm working hard to regain pagerank
