The company was founded after seeing a niche in the market for high quality, high availability hosting, and is one of the most respected hosting companies in the marketplace. We have always been focussed on two things specifically; providing high technical quality services and making sure our clients are completely happy with our services.

I can definitely recommend my host, <a href="http://www.valcatohosting.com" title="Valcato Hosting" rel="nofollow">Valcato</a>, too, and I've been with them for more than 3 years, and they never cease to amaze me at how good and solid they are in terms of their customer service, technical service (the uptime, speed, stability etc.) and knowhow, and also their business vision.

They've recently moved/upgraded their servers in the view of adding new services such as dedicated hosting, and existing customers have benefited as well with more space etc. Growing slowly to ensure no mistakes are made.
None of my sites get the 'digg' effect, but as with all major traffic sites, a caching plugin (e.g. for Wordpress) is <a href="https://billing.valcatosupport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=259" title="Valcato Forums - Caching" rel="nofollow">a good idea</a>.

It is possible to find a quality shared host that doesn't oversell their servers and that provide a level of service that will accommodate most web sites.

I shouldn't do this because I am not on their payroll ;), but I can recommend my new host very highly. I am paying less and getting more with HawkHost than I was the big name shared hosts. The server I'm on has about a third the amount the big names cram on theirs, and my site is always quick and responsive since I made the move. Check them out if you're in the market for a new shared host.

That is a very good question and one that is debated constantly. The problem is that the answer is different for each and every site. There are many variables that have to be considered. Chief amongst them are: how much traffic do you receive, and what are the users doing on the site? Users viewing static html are going to cause much less load on a server than users accessing database heavy sites or streaming audio and video. What is really comes does to is what quality of service you wish to provide to your users. How well is your site performing? If it is getting bogged down, or if it is getting suspended by your shared provider, it is time to upgrade in order to provide the best possible experience. Also, mlankton, thanks for the recommendation!

question for kpriss:

Who do you use for hosting? I'm getting around 3,000 uniques a day and my current hosting service sucks.

I'm with a virtual host and love it! Doubt any of the articles I write on my main site is really ever going to hit Digg (it's not about tech stuff for a start ;D) but I am supposedly pulling in 300 uniques a day. I'm not sure how much to trust the stats script to be honest, as I run 3, and each say slightly different things (concurring to the 300/average day) but am not sure how many are just crawlers?

Thanks to the posters above for the rough indicator (1500/day) If (and I'm not sure I really like it to) the site ever becomes that big, I will be asking my current host to help me with setting up a dedicated server, as they *do* know what they're doing.

On another note, I don't have any ads on my sites. So no ad revenue at all as an incentive.

I switched to clustered hosting on mosso when one of my article directories crashed a hostgator server. So for me the switch was obvious as I was being kicked off of shared hosting. I tried a VPS as well before going the clustered root - but it crashed that as well.

We had a few bad experience with my site. Thought it has only 200 - 300 uniques/day, and average 3 page views/ visit. Our site has a forum in it and the rest is few news pages and company profile. We first hosted it with IXWebhosting who give very cheap and attractive plan comparing the others. But we had a very bad time with them with our site goes down every 2 days for atleast 30 mins.
And then now we moved our site to yahoo webhosting and is much better but very little control over the space or features. But now after 1 yr of good time, we are now facing 500-error often. As we also run game servers for our multiplayer mobile games which needs good CPU and memory, I was always thinking if Dedicated server will work for us.

It's a good question and one I have wondered about in the past, I only wondered because my traffic is no-where near those levels yet for me to be concerned.

Interesting to read about for when I am ready though!

Totally Agree with MistaPrimeMinista.
Bandwidth for marketing purposes only not for real usage. And it sucks. But as a customer I need to look more than in the marketing highlines!

I can vouch for rackspace as well. One of my heavy traffic sites runs off there servers and uptime had been 100%. Nary a hiccup.

The nice thing about dedicated hosting is you have full control over all the features- especially the all important backup and restore feature. It's something a blogger needs. Imagine- losing all your posts form 5 years back in one server crash. Ouch!

My host (in fact the cheap reseller) used to panic when my site would exceed 500MB per month :) It was when I had not started blogging. Since my current blog is with wordpress.com (with CSS and domain upgrade) I am not concerned about bandwidth but in turn have to compromise with features.

Well, godaddy had a notorious rep since back then. Try rackspace. They really have fanatical support and obscenely good performance

Well, my motivation for doing this article was selfish. I was curious how long I would be able to get away with shared hosting myself. So far I have nothing bad to say about my host. I've been lucky, it looks like I picked a good one.

My friend J.D.'s site got hit by a flood of traffic after a Dutch paper's web presence featured his site. He got shut down, but he got 4-5k uniques that day, and at peak was probably seeing about 500 concurrent visitors. Nicely, he held on to a lot of that traffic and saw his average daily uniques just about double, and he kept them because his traffic never did go back down to it's previous levels.

From what it sounds like, if you are seeing less than 1500 uniques a day average, shared might be all you'll ever need. If you have a good shared host you certainly can't beat the price. If you're pulling 3000 uniques a day, I don't see a problem paying for dedicated because your monthly ad revenue is probably pretty good at that point.

I think as soon as you hit the 20~30GB bandwidth a month you need to think about dedicated or at least VPS...
