Is Akismet The Best Tool To Block WordPress Comment Spam?
I’ve just decided to switch back to using Akismet to protect this site from comment spam. In the past I wasn’t a big fan of Akismet, because it didn’t provide a lot of ways to deal with false positives, but I feel that I need to try something new as too much spam has been getting through.
Previously I was using Spam Karma 2 as it offered the most control that allowed me to ensure that regular commentators on this blog got through ok, but recently it has been letting too many spam comments through. I was getting so many each day that I’ve been logging on nearly every hour and spending around an hour a day just deleting spam.
I think that Spam Karma 2 has lost it’s position as the best WordPress anti-spam tool because the developer isn’t actively developing it because he said he couldn’t see the point of trying to compete with Akismet, which is bundled with WordPress. I can kind of see his point, but I still think it’s a real shame.
So, what do you think is currently the best WordPress anti-spam tool? Is it now Akismet? Or is there a new kid on the block that has stepped in where Spam Karma 2 has left off?

Have you tried Defensio?

I’m still using Aksimet. It’s been the best for me. While there will be some spam that gets through from time to time, once I mark it as spam, the plugin catches it next time around.

My experience with it is good and relieves me from spams (a two or three per week escape it’s reach but that’s low compared to number that gets filtered.)

i think akismet is still the best because they are used by millions of wordpress.com users too.
+ us wordpress.org users, we all create a powerful anti spam i guest.
thanks

I don’t mind that Askimet occasionally filters out legitimate comments- at least it prevents almost 26,000 pieces of spam every week!
whew…

Well I’ve been running Akismet for 8 hours now and it hasn’t let any spam comments through, which is way better than SK2 was doing. Hopefully if it’s created false positives, users will email me as there’s no way I’m plowing through the hundreds of spam comments I get a day

so you have 2 choices now.
1) Use Askimet and work on approving few good comments caught.
2) Dont use it but check all comments if its spammy.

I think Askimet is really good for catching spams, but it also does some bad activities as they often mark good posts as well as spam. Sometimes this tool irritates me. But my opinion is from a blog which I run and post max 2 posts per month and has only 200 visitors per month.

Howdy Everton -
I hope to see more articles like this one as I need a lot of refreshing to get back “up to speed” - I still use Askimet at Bloglyne.com and it seems to work pretty good, but I am not dealing with the kind of attacks and traffic you are.
I’m glad I finally have time to begin catching up on your site.
I have started posting again at Bloglyne.com and will have a new Directory site up soon. Your template looks great - a LOT cleaner than the one I’m still using.
Stop by when you get a chance, would like to hear from you!
