Joomla 1.0.14RC1 Released

joomla-logo-horz-color-slogan.pngJoomla 1.0.14 RC1 was released today, bringing the CMS’ mature branch a step away from what is supposed to be the final release in the 1.0.x tree.

Joomla is an open source CMS started by former core developers of the CMS Mambo. The 1.0.x tree of Joomla was forked directly from Mambo. Work has been underway on a massive overhaul of the system, Joomla 1.5, which finally does away with nested tables, which should lighten things a bit. The changes in Joomla 1.5 are too numerous to list; it’s just about a whole new CMS altogether. Joomla 1.5 is currently on the fourth release candidate, and the release version is expected before the end of February.

Those running Joomla 1.0.13 can give 1.0.14RC1 a try, or wait for the soon to be released 1.0.14 final. This release does address one major and three minor security breaches. I upgraded earlier today and have experienced no problems with the update. Just remember to always back up before upgrading a live website!

I’ve really never liked these ‘CMS’s going around calling themselves content management systems. I’ve tried about 20 of the open source ones, and I’ve never found one to actually be a generic ‘content management’ system (like all the big names in real commercial CMS solutions). They all seem to be slightly capable blogging engines and thats really about it.

Maybe I am being unfair to joomla, as I havn’t tried it in a while, but does this new version support custom object types (with custom meta information), custom templating for different object types, etc? customizable workflow? other really basic parts of cms?

Hmmm… will upgrading Joomla be as simple as overwriting existing files with the new package as with wordpress? Or is it more involved?

Well.. I really like Joomla and consider it to be a “CMS” .. But I havent ever had a hands on experience with a Commercial CMS like you mentioned.. Maybe thatz why ..

The Critic: Nope, same as wp. Joomla, like wp, is php. Patching is as simple as unpacking the archive.

Kline: while Joomla may not offer some of the user management features of more arcane CMS solutions, it does offer both designers and administrators many features and capabilities not found in a blogging solution. I can’t comment on 1.5 because I am waiting for it to go release, and I am dreading the migration because I am thinking there will be a lot of by-hand re-populating of my site when I do transition. I know that the administration of Joomla 1.5 will be as new as the foundation, so I will comment on the changes when I upgrade. In fact that will likely be an article.

Excellent! Now I can upgrade without that nagging fear that a postupgrade leads to an unusable site
