New Macbook Air, Power Mac From Apple
Two days into Apple’s annual week-long lovefest Macworld have seen two of the company’s flagship hardware products refreshed for 2008.
The Macbook Air is a very slender Macbook. So slender it will fit into a manilla envelope. The sexy profile adds about $700 to the price, and it still sports the too-small 13″ display.
What will get Mac users in full drool mode is the new Power Mac that was revealed last week prior to the show. Same case they’ve been using since the G5 was introduced, but now the standard configuration boasts two quad core 2.8 GHz Intel Xeon processors. That’s 8 cores in the base model folks. Single CPU models are available special order, and will deduct $500 from the base price of $2799.00. CPUs available in 2.8, 3.0 and 3.2 GHz speeds.
This kind of processing power would have made me dizzy ten years ago, when I dreamt of a 600 MHz DEC Alpha at a time when Intel Pentiums were maxxed out at 200 MHz. Hopefully the next version of Mac OS X will drop support for Power PC architecture so I can sell the wife on the necessity to upgrade ![]()

Staying on top of Mac technology alone is making my head hurt. But I obviously want more!
