Joomla! 1.5 Stable Released

joomla-logo-horz-color-slogan.pngTwo and a half years of development came to fruition today, when it was announced that Joomla! 1.5 Stable was made available for download.

Joomla! 1.5 is a major rewrite of the core Joomla! codebase, which was forked from Mambo on August 17, 2005. Joomla! 1.0.x retained a great measure of compatibility with Mambo, but Joomla! 1.5 will change all that as numerous internal changes were made to the Joomla! codebase. In fact, Joomla! 1.5 is not backwards compatible with Joomla! 1.0.x. Joomla! 1.5 is the future of Joomla!, and provided there is a 1.5 version of your template or a 1.5 template you’ve been thinking about, now is the time to think about getting off the fence and upgrading. It won’t be long before developer support and extensions for the legacy 1.0.x branch dwindle to nothing. Good luck on the migration, as while a tool has been made available to assist Joomla 1.0.x users, the process appears arcane and may require a lot of hand-repopulating of your new Joomla! 1.5 site. Don’t forget that you need to use Joomla! 1.5 compatible templates, as the structure of Joomla! generated content has changed dramatically.

Joomla!, despite all the bad-mouthing it gets here on Connected Internet from Joey, is a great CMS. It’s developer community is overshadowed only by Wordpress, and there are some incredibly talented designers making templates for Joomla!. If you are ever putting a site together that you feel Wordpress may not be the best solution for, I encourage you to take a hard look at Joomla!.

Not badmouthing. Just fussing a bit.

Yeah, Joomla 1.5 is currently here, but I will not be upgrading anytime soon, because I am not PHP wizard and cannot change the templates… I hope this template I am using will be upgraded to 1.5 soon…

Changing the templates doesn’t require a php wizard! It only takes about 10 minutes, plus you can run your 1.5 in legacy mode and use your templates without editing.

Here are the instructions on changing templates to 1.5
