What Security Applications Do You Use On Your PC?

View Comments February 5, 2008 | Everton

Most of my regular readers know that my ‘day job’ is working for an ISP in the UK.  One of the projects I’m working on is looking at PC-based security applications.  I realised today that I’m a bit out of touch as to what applications people are running on their machines.

So, I thought rather than spending thousands of pounds on focus groups I thought I’d just ask my readers.  What security do you have on your machine?  Do you use an all in one package like Norton 2008, or a mixture of programs? What made you choose your current suite of programs?  What programs have you used in the past?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

  • I use kaspersky AV 7 and spyware doctor from google pack :)
  • I've been using McAfee for years till I realized how much it made my Pentium 3.2 Ghz feel like a 486DX4-100.... and how it made my core2duo 2Ghz feel like a Pentium 1.5Ghz.

    -grrrr-

Switched to Norton 360 and Spybot. Things have been VERY zippy since then.
  • I'm mainly using Zone Alarm (Free) and NOD32.

I've been using NOD32 for years now, very good indeed, doesn't use much resource and works very well!
  • al
    I use:
comodo for my firewall and antivirus
    CCleaner
    Spybot search and destroy and
    Spywareblaster

So far - so good and no probs
  • I used kaspersky on my PC. It is robust and rapid
  • I've used ESET Nod32 antivirus for a long time. It doesn't use much memory and I only see it when/if it discovers a virus or similar threat ie. malware, trojan etc.

    I can highly recommend it.

As a firewall I use Comodo Firewall. The recently launched version 3 now supports Vista as well. It's a free firewall and comes very recommended.
  • I'm surprised to see so many people (so far) using Avast. Is it any good? I'm considering purchasing the Windows Home Server version.
  • I just have Avast Antivirus Home Edition installed that updates the database frequently.
  • Avast Antivirus Home Edition (FREE)
  • I've got a dual boot laptop with WinXP and Ubuntu 7.10.

I use the Ubuntu for all my general internet access related daily activity, don't need Anti-spyware, anti-virus, etc..

For the WinXp though I do use the following:
    Firewall: Zone Alarm Firewall (FREE)
Anti-Virus: Avast Antivirus Home Edition (FREE)
Anti-Spyware: Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search & Destroy (ALL FREE)
    Cleaner: CCleaner (FREE)
Browser: Firefox with extensions NoScript and Adblock Plus
