TomTom Launch New GO 730 And GO 930 GPS Devices

Last September I invested in a TomTom GO 720 GPS device and a Dension Gateway 500 for my new car. The TomTom GO 720 has been a great performer, despite occasionally it has tried to wipe me out by sending me down non-existent roads! The voice recognition is very impressive, and the extra cost was well worth the investment when I used it for the first time with my girlfriend in the new wheels.

One of my big bugbears with the TomTom GO 720 though has been how it sometimes calculates routes. I’ve always suspected that it calculates routes too much based on ‘how the crow flies’, rather than based upon average driving speeds on certain roads.

This suspicion has been confirmed with the launch of the latest TomTom devices, the GO 930 and 730 models, that include ‘IQ Routes’ technology alongside several other updates, which plots the best route based upon the average speed of certain roads, rather than the speed limit, so it can calculate whether the shortest route is actually the quickest, thus saving time and fuel.

If this works then it could add a vital level of intelligence to TomTom GPS route planning. Hopefully TomTom will add in future versions the ability to take into account the average driving style and speed of each owner when calculating routes!
