Awesome list, had similar problems with morons spamming our comments section (which are currently offline for cleaning!) – if anyone wants to join me on a jihad against the *pharmacy people drop me an email… We’re implimenting per-ip limiting now as well as the captcha, akismet, and cookie scanning methods. They must be so bored writing bots to crack all this.

I agree, the viagra/cialis guys need shot, I logged into one of my students sites the other day and there were 56 comments form the same guy, one on every single post! and akismet didn’t catch it!

Anyways, you said you set your forums to where the user can not post a link until 50 posts… I have a few forums I run and I’ve never seen this in the options, but yet I see may forums using it/talking about it. I use phpbb on all of my forums, can you point me in the right direction? I want to set mine to maybe 5-10, I think that should be good.

This is so true. I get so many viagra and cialis trackbacks and comments everyday.
Plus the occasional free iphone.
It really pisses me off.
Sometimes though there are some good sites that really just get a bit overzealous

Too Funny! I think at one point in everyone’s early stages and sometimes even later stages of SEO, we have taken part in a few or all of those tactics you mentioned. To a degree. Another spammy tactic I have heard of is creating a number of different users on the social bookmarking and networking sites to get a link back from the profile page. There are about 25-30 of the main ones that “dofollow”.

You could visit dead forums, that haven’t had a new thread in a year, and spam each thread with a long list of pharmaceutical links.

Nice list. Along the same lines is spamming vulnerable guest books on .edu domains. Shotty method that is questionable at best.
