Food, Travel And The Blogosphere

The world is a big place. The more you see of it the more you realize how little of it you truly know. In such a vast sea of humanity, will we ever be able to get past all of our cultural and religious baggage to really understand each other?

Sure. Beneath all that garbage everyone is more alike than different. Parents love their children whether they’re in Bangor, Maine or in Bangladesh. We all like sex, a good meal and a good night’s sleep. Well, most of us anyway.

On the subject of food, maybe with the exception of music nothing evokes memory like dishes from our past. The smells and tastes we experience can take us back to a different time in our life and remind us of who we were with, where we were at, and who we were.

Food is almost an inexpensive form of travel. Maybe you haven’t been somewhere. Maybe you aren’t going anywhere, but…if you’re anywhere near an urban area you can find a taste of someplace else if you look. Not to mention you can go wherever you want within the confines of your own kitchen.

Worldwide, people have an obsession with food. If anything unites all cultures it’s that we all celebrate with food, and we all like to celebrate. It should come as no surprise that love of food wouldn’t take long to invade the blogosphere. Anywhere a significant food culture can be found, any large urban area for that matter, is sure to be home to someone who is documenting their love for that area’s cuisine in a blog.

I’ve browsed quite a few food blogs from around the world. Like all blogs, they range from amateurish sites that are just as poorly thrown together as any bad blog you’ve stumbled across, to sites that really stand out and are so well done you wonder why anyone would bother reading a restaurant review in that area’s local newspapers.

Do a search for food blogs in the area you live in. Some food blogger might lead you to a hidden gem you didn’t know about, or save you from a bad meal. If you are traveling anywhere, be sure to contact a food blogger from that part of the world. At the very least, they will probably be kind enough to give you some tips by email on where to go and what to avoid. If you’re lucky, you may find a really nice food blogger who will spend an afternoon or evening of their time giving you a local food tour.

It’s a big internet, and a much bigger world. Enjoy all of it you can, and don’t be afraid to exploit your membership in the blogging community. Connect with a fellow blogger. Remember, we’re more alike than different, especially in the blogosphere.

I am entirely with you on this score. I have personal experience of great things happening to me because of the net. New friends, insights, clarifications, even cure for minor illnesses, have all been experienced by me.
