Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 Beta Starts

Although there has been a very well publicised data corruption bug with Windows Home Server, I haven’t suffered from it and my WHS experience has been fantastic and I recommend anyone who has more than one PC in the home and significant home networking needs to consider WHS.

Microsoft are planning to fix the data corruption issue in early June and have just sent me an email trying to recruit beta trialists for Windows Home Server Power Pack 1, which will add the following new features and more to Windows Home Server:

  • Windows Vista X64 Connector Software: I’ll finally be able to backup my 64bit main PC!
  • Windows Home Server Data Backup Option: WHS will now backup itself as another ‘PC’
  • Greater Remote Access Control: Control added over which tabs RAS users will be able to see e.g. blocking certain shared folders, WHS key functions. New ‘Views’ only option where users can see files but not download. File upload improved in IE 6 & 7
  • Home Computer Backups: Tool added to repair backups. Option also added to allow PCs to be woken up if in sleep or hibernation mode to run their scheduled backup
