Alton Towers Theme Park Bans Blackberries

I grew up in Nottingham so I’ve always been a big fan of Alton Towers, which was just ‘down the road’. For those of you who don’t know what Alton Towers is, it’s the biggest and best theme park in the UK by miles, with over 2.5m visitors every year.

Alton Towers have just gone up even further in my estimation by banning CrackBlackerries, PDAs and smartphones and any parent seen using one will have it confiscated by Alton Towers staff.

Russell Barnes, a director of the Staffordshire attraction, said: “It’s important for parents and kids to focus on nothing more than having the best possible time.”

Some may accuse this of being a PR stunt, but even if it is I think it’s a great move as too many parents are neglecting their kids because of their addiction to email. Hopefully fewer parents will get ‘fired’ as a result!

Hmmm interesting, personally I’d put a ban on the talking on them but receiving messages is better known for being more discreet than a phone call!I recently activated “push” email on my smartphone and I’m told that I’m more relaxed and I don’t spend ages fiddling with my phone whilst we’re out shopping to find nothing there!! Proof - Push email can improve your relationships! That said I do run a business, and am not just answering my email for the sake of it - I do need to know when there’s a problem!

Banning a fruit would be a bit crazy, however they should probably ban burgers and encourage healthy eating?!!?!

I think that this is a great move which must be followed in all places where families go together.

Whilst this is a good idea for families and will ensure that parents and children have more time to enjoy each other’s company, I would be very unhappy if I was out with friends and asked to deposit my Blackberry in the care of someone working in the theme park.

I often go to theme parks with friends, and I do have a Blackberry for when I am out of the office as it allows me to keep in touch with my emails. I’m not going to sit and use it all day when I am on a day out, but I would certainly want to check it a couple of times during the day. I don’t see why someone should be made an example of if they are not with any young children.
