I made my blogging comeback today after a month or so off to deal with various things including a house move. It felt a bit weird reading feeds after such a long break and i was a bit rusty around the WordPress dashboard, but discovering that there was yet another new WordPresss release made me feel quickly at home!
WordPress 2.6 doesn’t appear to introduce any mind-blowing new features, but there do appear to be some new bits and bobs that will come in handy:
- Live theme preview – very handy if you frequently dabble with your theme. Now you won’t affect users while you experiment
- Revision history – useful for multi-author blogs like this one
- Google Gears support – store WordPress images, scripts etc on a PC to speedup the site
I found the addition of Google Gears support the most interesting, as I hadn’t really paid attention to Gears before or fully understood what it could do. Gears is a plug-in that extends your browser to create a richer platform for web applications, and which also makes them run faster. My favourite RSS reader, Google Reader, supports gears so hopefully now that I’ve installed Google Gears I’ll be able to catchup quicker on one month’s worth of RSS feeds!
