Poll: Which Mobile OS Will Be The Best?
I’ve been waiting to upgrade my Nokia N95 to a Sony Ericsson X1 Xperia ever since it was announced in Jan 08. I was hoping that I would be able to stay with my current network provider, T-Mobile, but it’s only going to be available next week on Vodafone in the UK. Vodafone don’t have any prices yet, but I’m hoping I’ll be able to get it for free because I’ll need a big price plan.
I’m fully convinced that it’s the phone for me as it delivers my main requirements (QWERTY keyboard, 3G, good Microsoft support), but I have to admit Google Android, and the (blurry) video below shows it in action.
I’m having some doubts now that more info about Google Android is becoming available. The image above is of the new HTC Dream which runs AndroI thought it’d be interesting to see what you think will be the best mobile OS in 2009. Will it be Symbian or Windows Mobile? Or will the newcomers on the block, Apple and Google Android, chip away at the older OSs?

I’ve been anxiously watching as well. It sounds like you and I have similar requirements - my current phone is the ATT Tilt (HTC TyTN II) though I’ve been waiting to play with the Touch Pro and now the non-touchscreen s740.
For me the decision is more than just OS and comes down to hardware and features with about equal ratings. For example, neither the new Google phone or the iPhone come with A2DP support for stereo bluetooth which is a must for me in the Gym and just walking around.
This is one of the ’special’ features left off many phones, but which drew me to the Tilt despite the presence of the Windows OS. Note also that there are many cooked ROMs available that will let you hide the terrible MSFT OS and replace it with HTC’s UI which I find to be a huge improvement.
I have high hopes for Android… but I’ll be waiting for it to arrive in a different package before I spend my money.

I have to say I hate windows mobile. I have had a few Vario 1 and 2’s(HTC Hermes) in the past and they were ok, plent of freedom but many crashes and way to many settings. It was a pig to connect to wifi.
I have a 1st gen iphone and i have to say its never let me down, like most apple stuff the OS is superb and stable. Its simple and easy to use with out any fuss. Its not as open but mine is unlocked etc so does give some freedom (its on orange).
As for Sony phones , like most sony kit they produce great hardware but the software is a bit crap. Poor interface for navigation etc (IMO).
I work in an IT dept running servers, SANs etc so i am a techie, the iPhone has become a firm favourite to a lot of the IT People here , mostly switching from Windows Mobile.
