How to Free Your Pocket
My pocket bulges. It’s got a slim wallet, coins, a skinny Motorolla, my car keys, it’s attendant alarm and an extra key ring. So you can imagine that my pants appear to be a pregnant pachyderm. It’s definitely not the ‘in-look’ for the fashion
conscious dude.
Oh, and it looks worse when wearing skinny jeans.
Emptying the pocktes of everything but the basics which includes the wallet and they keyring still makes it look bloated. The keys in particular take up too much space and jut in all directions. I’d love to leave the keys behind but someone may just drive away with my vehicle. So the keys mandatorily go where I go.
I was therefore happy when Nissan re-announced a skinny device that incorporates many of my madantory gadgets in one. The gadget pictured here is a cellphone phone that prototypes Nissan’s Intelligent Key System. This unit allows the mobile phone to act as a key-less entry system for various Nissan cars. Effectively, it eliminates carrying a separate key, alarm nub and cellphone!
Operation is simple, using a two-way wireless system which communicates with the vehicle. It allows the car to be unlocked automatically and also lets you fire up the car withot switching the ignition. From what I read, early versions of the Key System had been deployed in almost a million cars built since 2002.
I love the concept. Most of us go around with a mobile phone. Making the key integral to your mobile sheds a lot of dead weight- and once again catapults the phone a notch higher in the category of true convergence devices!
Hmmm… my next car may be a Nissan

It’s a great idea but does this mean that people will have to get a brand new phone to work with their car? Or will this work on an existing technology like Bluetooth and you can just install some software?

Sounds like a good idea to me, perhaps better if it had a phone charger, lighter and space to fit in a couple of Cigis

This is a clever idea but i don’t understand how successful it will be.
Will it be put onto a certain network, will it be unlocked for any network.
How will the phone stick to having a single signal for your car.
What if the phone crashes and loses the information for your car unlocking system.
the list of problems seem endless…correct me if i’m wrong.
